.... We will yell at Verizon too for you.

I forgot a fork...you may need to use your fingers.

Fingers? For chocolate pie, I don' need no steenkin' fingers.

/me buries face in pie.

Yum!

I have DSL through Speakeasy. It isn't cheap, but it is blindingly fast--6 Mb, and unlike Verizon and the cable company, they have a very liberal TOS. Rather than preventing you (at the network level and by the TOS) from running web and email servers, they have FAQs, documentation, and forums on how to do it, if you wish. It is completely stable, and the few times I've had any problems, they have always been extremely quick to send someone out. (I've had too many bad experiences with the cable company, and Verizon is only slightly better).

I had Speakeasy too and, yes, they are expensive but quite good.

Unless you live in an area that's oversold cable bandwidth or are too far away from the phone companies CO, I don't think the tech really matters much - it's more a question of price and support.

I've got Comcast for internet, tv and phone, and so far I really like it. One of the plusses for me is that I live a couple blocks from a major hospital, so when anything goes down, we're first in line to get it fixed. I used to live way out in the country, and with all the trees here and no underground power or cable lines, we had constant outages. What a hassle! It took forever to get them out to fix anything. Comcast's customer service is pretty bad, but when everything works, it's really nice.

My favorite thing is when you call to report an internet outage, they refer you to their web page for information. But...but...if my internet service is out...how can I..Hello? Click...buzzzzzzzz.

Plausible deniabilty, dontcha love it?. The best way to avoid lousy customer service is to be lucky enough to never need it. With the Cable company, or my Dell, or even with SL for that matter. I've been fortunate to never have any major issues, so far.

I never understood that thought process:

For problems with your internet service visit our website.

For problems with your phone service call 1-800-328-7448 (figure out what that spells)

You people with FIOS can go freeze in the ninth circle of Hell. All around me, everybody's got FIOS. Will Verizon put it in MY neighborhood? Still waiting, after more than a year.

I hate you all.

I feel your pain. I've been on the notification list for well over a year, and I know a couple of neighbors who really want to get it as well. It makes no sense that it hasn't become available in our neighborhood when people north, south, east, and west of us all have it already. My only theory is that where I live all power, phone, and other cabling is buried, probably due to some local ordinance. That probably makes it more expensive for Verizon to make it available. I hope they don't plan on skipping my area entirely.

Ugh! It might be my friends only choice, though, if she can't find any DSL available. And she still won't be able to join SL since I don't think it's compatible with satellite internet. So, I guess I won't be inviting her over to my skybox to hang out anytime soon. Well, not until she moves anyway.

Satellite is not *supported*, but it works pretty well. Because of the different FAPs, I recoommend Wild Blue/DISH over Hughes.net.

It is a little more expensive than other choice, but when you *don't* have another choice...

The main difficulty with satellite is the ping times of 1500 ms. Don't try to play any combat games 8-(
