Cool, I'm glad your event was a success and you weren't too hampered by lag. (Are you on mainland? I'd assume so. I am, but I'm 700m in the sky which apparently reduces lag quite a bit.)
I forgot to mention - you had asked about lag caused by the visitor scanner. My scanner is a very simple script that scans a small area every 60 seconds. (Let me know if you'd like a copy.) My understanding is that this is a fairly low-load script compared to devices that listen to open chat, for example.
I don't know much about script lag; I think it's different from (and separate from) other kinds of lag, like chat lag and the lag that makes it hard to control avatar movements. Your fighters may be using scripted weapons and such, though, which could make script lag relevant.
If you are worried about script lag, you could perhaps turn off the visitor scanner during fight events. I principally use the visitor scanner to keep track of who visits the cafe when I am *not* there; if the script were a problem during big events I could (in theory) turn it off and just jot manually down the names of the avatars that show up at the event. I'm not sure how much of a difference this would make, though.

Yes I'm mainland. I was told to put my arena high up to reduce lag. My sim is old and very grumpy when it comes to performance. The good thing is that it's deserted most of the time, so even if I have like 30 people crammed into my place it isn't too bad. I'm only about 300 m up, but I would love to go higher. Can I select my whole building and everything in it and move it up about 400 meters? lol
A very knowledgeable friend of mine told me that my combat system in particular is one the the worst ones out there for causing lag. It's entirely built on "listeners" whatever that means. I would love to get a copy of the scanner from you if you didn't mind. I think it would be the perfect thing.

For the record,if someone who was paying me 2-4 dollars a week yelled at me for anything I would tell them where to shove that 2-4 dollars. Clearly people work in SL for fun,not to make massive amounts of money. (besides content creators etc....)

From: Royce Boa How do you get people to join your VIP group without badgering them too much? Make your VIP group open enrollment. Use one of those auto-inviters. You canset it to send the invite to new people in the area or set up a prim board they can touch to join. Also, have a host of your events greeting newcomers and offering the VIP tag. You can pay a host about 75L a hour to work for you in this capacity. From: someone How often do you guys post your events (paid ad i mean)? every event? Keep a running classified ad about yout venue all the time. This will be 50L a week. It will auto-renew. You can change the information and the image as you feel you need to. When posting your events in the events area - do as the Lindens suggest - post two days in advance. Use teh SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS thread in these forums to post your event about once a week also. From: someone Can you recommend some good stage / club lights that I can use over top of the ring? Club lights are not the best thing to use in your type of events. Check out Slexchange and look for some some good lighting devices that aren't going to change colors or spin around.

From: Royce Boa Can I select my whole building and everything in it and move it up about 400 meters? lol You sure can--I've done it many times--just drag-select everything from a large cam distance, and slide it up. To go that far, you'd need to do it in a couple of "hops" of cam-repositioning, but definitely do-able. However, it's probably not gonna make a huge difference in lag. Anywhere off the ground and above the cloud layer will get most of the benefit. From: Madhu Maruti I forgot to mention - you had asked about lag caused by the visitor scanner. My scanner is a very simple script that scans a small area every 60 seconds. Yeah, scanners don't have to be particularly laggy. But a single sensor scan will only report the nearest 16 agents it sees, so if the scanner is reporting more than that, then it's doing multiple sensor runs per report, presumably by looking at a slice, rotating, then looking at the next slice, etc. Or it can wander around--I knew that hummingbird was up to something! From: Royce A very knowledgeable friend of mine told me that my combat system in particular is one the the worst ones out there for causing lag. It's entirely built on "listeners" whatever that means. Hmmm... I wouldn't loose too much sleep about that. It would be a different story if the whole audience were supposed to be able to fight each other, but with two competitors, the combat system itself is pretty unlikely to cause detectable lag--certainly not from listeners on non-zero channels--unless it's doing something really silly. What causes lag evolves as SL changes; now, for events like this, probably the most important thing is that the audience members mostly arrive early, remain seated, and avoid wardrobe changes while the event is underway. (Oh, and Lias's point about lights is quite correct; Royce, forget about that particle light ring I sent you in-world, it would just be silly unless the combatants sometimes break into spontaneous club dancing. )

Pride Fighting: The Musical. You have seen Anderson Silva after a victory right? I actually did hang those lights..I'm gonna turn them on along with my other effect lights at the beginning of the event when I'm announcing everything, and at the end for teh belt ceremony. My ring has a cool fog and fire effect with it too. So very glitzy.
