This isn't really much of a question but i suppose i can make it one. "Have you seen this article?" http://physorg.com/news131631464.html A 41-year-old paralysed man uses brain waves to control his character in 'Second Life'. I do feel its important for all of us to have some rebuttals to the typical argument of "what is second life good for?" As well as making me curious... in 10 years, will we all be putting on our brain caps & goggles and bidding farewell to the physical world?

That's pretty neat, and I bet the guy gets hooked on SL. Oh wait, he can't type, so he's got to use voice. Well, guess that means the anti-voice tards won't talk to him.

Actually there are many many disabled people within SL who have had the marvelous experience of doing things in world that just are not possible in RL.
One of my family that joined me in game about 4 years ago is. Due to her Cerebal Palsy she has never in her life walked. I cannot begin to describe the Joy on her face I witnessed seeing her walk, Run, Snowboard, Drive, Dance or a hundred other things in world that she will never do in RL. So what if she types a little slowly.

i always enjoy reading things like that! thanks Court for the gentle reminder that SL can be a joy to behold!
as for the "brain upload" idea, i would be game...just to walk around in my avas world for a bit and see and experience things through "her" eyes would be a hoot if it was possible.

Yup this is rather cool and rather scary at the same time. Cool because it's a great example of technology and social inclusion and scary because I've read too many Philip K Dick stories!

Dick stories - that would be like saying Simak was overrated.

A futuristic idea (and remember Moore's Law of technology acceleration) is that we can "switch" from our actual muscles to our avatar, so we'll look think & feel that we're walking, running, flying, playing Quidditch, so real that we wont be able to tell which is which in a general sense (no pun intended). wheee!

There are lot of positive things about SL and you can see that everyday, the main key is that you can create content. That give us all the oportunity of make art and, the share of knowledge you can get is huge:
Architects, programmers, animators, builders, scripters, actors and writers (for machinima), etc etc etc.
Most of them working together to make something. I'm impressed, i think every month I met a new person that is involved in at least one of these things and makes excellent stuff.
As one of many examples you can go to Edo (189,2,33): A set of 12 sims that recreates a japanese city from the Edo period (and old japanese period)

I think that is really inspiring. I hope SL goes from strength to strength in its abilities to help those of us with disabilities to overcome them.

This from the article.
"Second Life is an increasingly popular virtual world in which people -- and animals -- are represented by animated avatars and do everything from social activities to shopping. "
People and ANIMALS are represented by avatars in Second Life?

I mentioned the use of Voice for people with disabilities and was quickly told that "those kinds of people arent here".
