I'm just wondering if anyone here on the forums ever logs into SL secretly at work? Is that even possible? I imagine the bandwidth SL uses might set off something in IT departments so its probably not a good idea. (Of course I'm thinking about it. lol) However, I've read several posts from people with day jobs that seem to hint of logons at all times of the day. . .

One of my friends used to log on from work.
She lost her Job - now she never logs in at all. |

I do, although mostly during lunchtime unless someone sends me an IM > Email that I need to deal with.
Having said that, being half of the IT department does help... Broccoli _____________________

I wouldn't dare play SL at work ... but that point is moot since they have this whole domain blocked (along with huge chunks of the net). I can't even post in these forums. I work for one of those huge multinational corporations who feel I should be dedicating my life towards making their CEO rich. Locally I like the people I work with, but globally the corporation makes me ill with their bureaucracy and the way they spy on us with all their spyware installed on the 'puters at work. No the only time I can interact with SL is on my free time.

I log in from work when especially frustrated by some project or another. But then; I put in monitoring proxies for people!

I work at a university, and yes I log at work. What else am I going to do while I sit in my office all alone during "office hours" waiting for students to harras me, god forbid I work, then what would I do at home. I know I am backwards. At one time our entire department was in-world (demonstration of SL). Our IT is very generous, I am sure if this became habbitual, they would be concerned. _____________________

/me feels really smug.
Yes I log in from work. I had the network manager configure my pc so I could get past the firewall. And I didn't even have to sleep with him. My college has an educational project going in SL and as I'm basically running it I have to be able to get in. |

considering that you have to download the software to play, i don't recommend using work computers for personal use.
checking email is one thing - getting caught playing games is a quick way to lose your job. and some places have software set up that secretly moniters every towers' usage. surely you can make it through the day with 8-11 hours away from SL. _____________________

I am a Community Manager for a large MMORPG, and I log in at lunchtimes, just to see what's going on. No-one bats an eyelid. I work online exclusively so most of my time is spent dealing with my staff (all remote, almost), or checking forums and stuff like that.
Going on SL, is a bit of a busmans holiday for me, but its good fun It's also competitor analysis ![]() |

I did a few times, during my lunch break or other free period, but stopped becaue I didn't like the limited time frame to be in world. I do log on here from work. Or will when I go back in September.....

I wouldn't recommend it unless you are the person who is doing the monitoring of the use of your company's computers. Many employers push all kinds of monitoring software onto their employees computers, and playing a game while you are supposed to be working will get you fired in a lot of places -- again ... unless hehe you are the one who filters that data.

I *am* the IT Department where I work, so for me it's pretty easy to give in to the temptation to log in from work, and I frequently do, when I'm in my office. More often than not, I'm just idling there - but there's something about just being "connected" that makes my day flow a little more smoothly. You know, like heroin.

Well, it looks like my dreams of logging during slow days are quashed! Since I don't work for the IT department or sleep with anyone who does--yet. lol

to anyone who's concerned about logging onto SL from work but still wants to reach out to their loved ones you can use zonkster.com to send messages to residents in-world from any PC (and if the recipient responds by IM'ing you to your offline email address you can actually lead an entire conversation without being logged on).

But also should be mentioned, that all things done through the Internet at a company can be checked and hold against you... Morwen. ...having said that, it is relevant to draw to people's attention the status of in-world porn. If your company operates a proxy server for web access and you have not bypassed it, I believe it is true to say that the SL data stream can get porn images to you without passing through any filters or alerters in your corporate proxy... ...at the moment! As SL develops further towards regular standards (and yes that's a deal with the devil in so many ways but let's not get diverted, now shall we?) it is perfectly possible that the porn-heavy sim you were in the other day suddenly DOES start dropping http-transmitted JPGs into the smut filter of your proxy. Don't say you haven't been warned... |

I sneak in at work all the time, but since I own the place I have to hide it from my employees.

I also dun stay on for long. Jes to check in an get offlines an stuff. Mari _____________________

I administer a small network at work. I would not log in to SL even though I can. I wouldn't want to leave any traces of my goofing off. Even though I'm the one who takes care of such things, you never know who may check up on you.
I do post in forums from work though. I wouldn't push it and play a game. I've got it too good._____________________
