I was just uploading textures in world and one of them was supposed to be a face skin..but it was some random snapshot of people I have never seen before. I checked my file on my computer and it's definitely not that snapshot, so what does that mean? How odd is that?

http://www.secondlifeinsider.com/2007/10/18/lost-and-found-asset-server-gives-wrong-snapshot/

Not an isolated incident it seems :(.

If the asset server is handing out duplicate UUIDs we're in trouble .

The real question is, where did your skin texture go? Hopefully not to someone else, full perms, showing them as creator.

This happened to me while I was uploading vendor textures, 6 at a time.

Third time round, one of them was bricks. Bricks?! I don't sell bricks?! Checked the file on my computer, fine. Checked the 'uploaded' file in SL - bricks.

Tried it again and got my picture. L$10 on BRICKS, I ask you!

EDIT: I have a nice full perms brick texture now if anyone wants i-waaaaaaait a minute this could be really bad O.o

I'm really really hoping one of you guys bothered to make a JIRA entry for this kind of thing??? If you did. Stick a link here so we can all vote for it to be "fixed internally" huh?

I'm not sure there is anything we can do about this sort of thing since the asset server is on their end. Also, has anyone been able to recreate this error? Not sure if these are requirements of a JIRA report, but it would probably be a good idea anyways.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. I wanted one of my new sculpt texts, and got a picture of some avi in a ball gown. Not worth the L$10.

Yes, I was worried about it too. Luckily, it was just a scary demented vampire/zombie face so I'm not too worried! I really hope this is just an isolated thing, it could be bad :p

Could this be the result of two people doing uploads at exactly the same time, down to the millisecond?

I looked for a recent Jira on this (just searched for the texture version), and wasn't able to find anything that looked exactly right. There are a few similar things. Haven't experienced it myself, so someone who has had it happen may want to report it.

I'm wondering if their asset UUIDs aren't as unique as LL thought... and that would be megabad if they're getting overwritten. (I wonder if it would explain some of the missing inventory problems people have been having?)

Ok guys & gals,
I've created an entry in the lovely JIRA for you all to go vote and add your experiences to:

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-759

Please do, or I'll look like a nutcase :-P

Mimi - I quoted your original post for the problem description. Let me know if you hate that plan and I'll delete / amend the text.

They're almost certainly using off-the-shelf UUID code, probably open source. It's highly unlikely that the problem is simply a UUID being generated without some other bug being involved. Although, with the size of their network, I do wonder if they've done the math about how many UUIDs they generate world-wide every minute.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UUID if you're interested in the numbers.

That would make too much sense :(.

LL does not follow the official specification; some permanent description data can be proven to exist on the third section of numbers.

Haven't had that happen YET, but I am dealing with my textures just vanishing from my inventory for good regardless of the state of my cache. I'm really sick if that sh*t.

Happened to me earlier today, uploading a set of numbers in a bulk upload, 1 to 15.

Number 6 was a TV screen - how strange!

SL Blog now says it's fixed:

"Over the past few days, we’ve had several reports of texture uploads resulting in the wrong textures being uploaded to the residents inventory. You can find the according issue here in our http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-759

While we rolled out a fix for this tonight, one of our scripts failed, resulting in an about 30 minutes long unavailability of texture uploads.

Both issues are resolved."
