I saw this poll across the street and thought I'd steal it for here with some revisions.
This is an anonymous poll. With the new year quickly approaching, estimate how much you think you will spend in SL in 2010, in USD. This would include buying lindens, tier, payments/fees directly to LL as well as to other residents for goods and services etc. Deduct from this amount your stipend and any profits you may make from your in-world income. If you plan on spending $0 USD next year, choose the "break even" option. Do NOT include external costs such as the purchase of new computers, software or things like website hosting. In the comments, you can tell us if you will be spending more, less or about the same amount of money as 2009.

I'll probably be spending the same.. which amounts to: As little as I can get away with.
At most, what I spend actual money on is the tier and premium. Otherwise, nothing, nada, zip. I either make it in SL or I don't need to go shopping.

Can't hit on an exact or even approximate amount but it will probably be more than 2009 though only because between 2005 - 2009 I had a small SL income with a surplus to cash out. Those days are over for me so if I can manage to break even I'll consider myself lucky. And for me breaking even represents an increase in my expenditure on SL as up to now it's been negative... ie: making money rather than spending money.

Ahhhhhhh God. I don't want to think about it. I will spend more than $700, probably closer to at least a grand, maybe somewhat more. That includes tier on various land, too, though, not just mindless shopping, shopping, shopping.........

From: Argent Stonecutter Treasure "Imelda" Ballinger? It's those fatpacks that do it..............I *need* an assortment of colors. I don't do that with rugs anymore because Mickey taught me how to change their shape, lol, if they're mod.

I am optimistically forecasting a small profit next year - however I expect to have to take very careful control of costs to manage this.
...and now I am very much hoping I'm not here this time next year reporting a loss!

Profit. The only thing I spend money on is... 1. Donations to RL or SL causes 2. Giving L$ away randomly to newbies 3. Uploading occasional textures 4. Standard search listing fees Since I mostly script, that's all free. And since I bought a Lifetime Account years ago in SL, I get L$500/week for life stipend and 4096sqm of mainland tier for free. Guess it wasn't the crazy investment in SL to make as my friends said it was...LOL

From: Joshooah Lovenkraft Oh I didn't know they had lifetime accounts back in the day. May I ask how much that cost you? If I remember correctly, it was USD$225 at the time. If you were a beta-test user (which I wasn't) you got it at a cheaper price, I think.

Umm... I spent about 30000L this past month. So if you multiply that out for a whole year, about 360000L. That's about $1400USD, plus $10 for premium membership and $40 for tier each month. So $2000.... ouch... I've never added it up before....

$110/month in tier plus about $100/month for general spending makes *counts* $2,520 . I should look for something else - cheaper - to do with my time... Then again, the dollar being as weak as it is helps a lot as well . And if LL doesn't change its mind about grandfathered homesteads then I guess that's an extra $180 from July through December .

I spend all the lindens earned from selling things in SL. So I break even every year.

Depends a lot on weather or not I get any big building contracts next year. If one that I have bid on and that looks pretty solid comes through, then I'll definitely make a profit. Not enough to quit the day job, by any means, but solid profit. Likewise if I get any other full-sim or larger projects during the year, I should be solidly in the black.
If I get no projects in the full-sim and larger class, then I'll probably break even or just barely make a profit. If losses look too likely, I'll be forced to abandon land and cut back enough on in-world spending as required to remain at break-even or a slight profit.

Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

Definately profit. I spend about 10-15K linden on texture uploads/classifieds/sculpts/textures/tools and so on. Another 12K goes to XStreet homepage features. Plus I rent a parcel for my animation store. Since most sales come from there instead of the same store on my own parcel, I decided to keep it The rest of my sales, I cash out. From those dollars, I pay tier (about US$ 150 including VAT), premium membership (yearly), and the rest is profit.

If I could predict the future I'd be at the horse track. How can I know how much I will spend in the next year?

From: Argent Stonecutter Treasure "Imelda" Ballinger? Throw Sable's name in too. With respect to shoes, Treasure and I are in good company. AND....I like to add, she also had matching gloves and purses too. Her shoes even survived typhoon Ketsana. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/oct/08/imelda-marcos-shoes-ketsana-flooding

Nothing.
My account is not payment linked. I am that scupper that people hire. So I don't put anything in and I don't withdraw anything.

From: Hunter Fischer What Kitty said ! When you play month to month it doesn't seem like a whole lot until you put a yearly figure on it. Gee thanks Joshooah I was a bit surprised myself when I actually sat down and thought about it. I find the older I get the less I'm spending though. Many of the big ticket items I bought in my earlier days and for many, as you become more proficient in SL, you may start to dabble in content creation which might offset some of your costs. You often also learn how to make things that you might have purchased when you're new. I must admit my interest has been waning the last few months and I suspect I'll be spending less time in the new year which also means spending less money on SL.
