Is there a service in SL?

That has a trustworthy person who will go in and clean out inventories? There could be a lucrative business opportunity there if someone was ambitious and didn't mind long hours

I'm almost at 40K... with all the holiday seasons coming up I need to spend what time I have in SL on creating for my stores. I would easily pay 10K to have someone clean out all the junk ...according to my specifications. Security would probably be an issue though...but it sure would be nice to have that type of business in SL to utilize.

--->Sighs...will probably have to spend a few days’ stuffing boxes and deleting things from inventory that I will need right after...

Nope. And, don't give your password out to strangers. (^_^)y

I wish there was a way to do this without compromising your account. It would be the perfect job for me. I'm very good at organizing and spending time on tedious details, I have a fair amount of free time, and I could use some extra L's. I wouldn't expect anyone to trust me with their account password, though.

Even not considering the extreme security risk of giving your password to someone else, it is completely against TOS to share it with anyone.

One possible option, if you trust someone enough to exchange emails -- use the SL My Inventory product to create an XML file of your inventory. Someone else could then go thru that, finding duplicates, making notes as to what to delete and what to move where. There is only so much info that product will give you and you will still have to go thru someone's notes and manually do the inventory work yourself, but it could save you a bit of time.

ETA: Note that the product seems to have a limit on inventory size, but I do not remember what that number is. I do know that it will not work with my inventory, but mine is over 85k.

If I could get the SL My Inventory product to work with my inventory size, I would at least pay you lots just to do the little bit of sorting and organizing that can be done that way.

Oh well.........

*sigh*

I suppose that someone with that inventory list could write a script that would delete some items and move others around?

So the organizing person delivers the script to the user, who runs the script.

Since the inventory list is outside SL, it would also be possible to make a script builder that even tested the script (against the inventory LIST, not the inventory) so that you could verify that the right things were being done.

Can LSL actually delete inventory items and/or move inventory items around? I did not think it could directly act on inventory other than giving you an object or folder.

llRemoveInventory() will delete items, even the script that calls it.

But you're right, you can't MOVE inventory around, so my idea wouldn't work.

I think the Max the Guide Dog project is working on getting Max to handle your inventory, so it seems like it would be possible. I don't know how far along they are in that direction, though.

Removes inventory from the prim in which the script resides, it does NOT remove anything in the avatar inventory.

Whats needed is an "account lock" feature, that prevents spending money, deleting, or transferring items, or changing the password.

And a change to the rules that would allow other people to use your account for sorting inventory purposes. What we have now forces everyone to be their own file clerk, which obviously not everyone wants to be, or is good at.

The other possibility would be to use Windows remote desktop to access an already logged in account, that way you are not sharing your password, but without an account lock feature it would not be safe to do.

What a great feature this would be!!! I'm trying to decide if SL My Inventory would be more work than just shoving everything in boxes for now :(

It seems to me that it would be a lot of work simply telling someone else what to keep and what to delete.

lol 40k inventories are sim crashing loads.

I clean as I go,like at home in the kitchen!

I make a final box that has the sale product and a 2nd box as a back up.
I only open 1 folder of a box.if i am in a rush and open a box over searching in my inventory while working in the shops I do a search and delete the old one first thing!!

Keeping you inventory to a min number is best for a designer,
I need a good copy of a product when I need it and do not want to risk giving out the wrong perms or layers.

To really make a good sl living I think it is key to have all your ducks in a row and a neat and clean environment,This is a skill like scripting and building.Organization reflex in your products. So it should be a process you learn and something you can practice in every build.

Also giving out your password is against TOSS I think..

i never heard anything about inventories messing with sim's..only what we had rezzed did..
if i had a 40k inventory and then started to rezz it in a sim..then it would mess with that sims performance.. ;)

Shoving it all in boxes can actually take more time given how SL performs on some days. I tried that the other day and it seemed to take forever cuz you have to move things in small batches to avoid losing items. And you cannot put folders in there, so outfits that are already in their own folder have to be individually boxed first or just mixed in with other stuff.

A large part of my inventory is organized very well - I just have a lot of stuff. I have never had a sim crash upon my arrival or at any time while I was in it except for the one or two times that a sim was overloaded with avs at a store sale.

I'm about as close to 40K as possible and have never crashed a sim. Unlike LittleMe...my inventory not organized.

Which is why I started this thread in the first place. My inventory must be the one thing in SL or RL that is not organized...and I would do just about anything to get it that way...and down at least 20K. It is a nightmare to find anything..and several times I find doubles of shoes or textures I'd already bought and forgot about  .

I just wish there was a better way to organize inventory without having to give out your password...which I would not do anyway. This is my third year with my stores...and I did not start out with a good inventory system in the first place...in fact had no idea that copy items leave a copy and then when you take them you get another copy! By the time I figured it all out...it was out of control. Now... I just do not have the time to deal with it. By the time I get home from work., cook dinner, do chores around the house...then do any custom jobs in SL that have come in during the day, I just cannot force myself to clean inventory. I just finished modifying my new Christmas Store and now need to get to creating new stuff.

If I just had one wish for SL(at this time) it would be an Inventory cleanup system that does not include giving out my password. :o

Well, I am only partially organized - probably about 1/3 of it neatly organized and another 1/3 or so roughly organized.

After having done this quite a few times, I now always search my inventory before buying (well, almost always - just the other day I forgot and bought a dress I already had).

There are a few Jiras asking for various inventory changes - maybe take a short bit of time to search and add your votes to some.

For one thing, we need to be able to search by creator -- one of the more recent organizing methods I have started is to add the creator/store name to my folders, but for those stores that don't put any real identifier on the items, this takes more time cuz I have to pull up the properties of an item and check the profile of the creator to find the store name -- Geez and some creators do not even have their own store in their classifieds or their picks.

Another critical piece would be to see what an object is without having to actually rez it -- that prevents me from sorting/organizing some items if I am dancing in a no-rez location.

Most important would be if they could come up with some way that I could do inventory work offline. I cannot access SL from work, but I could work on an inventory file and then somehow merge it back on my next login.

Many people, LL included, have commented on how much better various aspects of SL runs with a smaller inventory -- and I can definitely see this on some things. So, it seems to me that it would be to LL's benefit to come up with better ways for us to manage our inventory.

and you won't crash a sim because of your inventory..your inventory is on an asset server which is separated..

this is from the wiki ;)
The asset servers function independently of the region simulators, though the region simulators request object data from the asset servers when a new object loads into the simulator.

in other words the sim notices what we wear and what we rez.. ;)
