Hi all

Is anyone from the UK out there using BT as their internet provider? If so, have you experienced any problems and how have you managed to sort it out regarding SL?
I've changed to BT recently - quite a few weeks now, but this week I've had alot of SL problems, and none of the solutions given by LL have worked.

I'm wondering now if it's the internet connection somehow, although I have had absolutely no problems before this week, and changed nothing, so I can't see what would have caused the problem. The network button in the lag meter is red and the bandwith meter in the Statistics bar starts of fine then goes down to zero. Any suggestions would help!! I can't do anything in SL:(.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this possibility or not, so I will...

ISPs throttle the downloading of heavy users. I'll explain it easier by telling you what Virgin does. There are 2 periods of 5 hours during every day - 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. - 9 p.m. During each period, a user has a download limit, depending on how much bandwidth s/he is paying for - a different limit for each period. If the limit is reached, downloads are throttled back and the internet gets very very slow. It's noticeable in SL, of course. I used to trigger it during the second period every day, when the limit is half what it is in the morning period. When it starts, it's sudden, and *very* noticeable, and when it stops, it's sudden. It triggered for me around the 5 - 5:30 p.m. mark and switched off at 11 p.m. on the dot.

That's Virgin. BT are known for overselling resources, and they are sure to do something similar. I got round my problem by going up to 20M bandwidth.

I am on a BT Business account (had to have it for a job), if you can pay extra with any ISP for a static IP - do it it's more reliable.

I have been capped by BT once, and that was horrible - even though I am on a biz line!

I never bothered with the router they sent me and just used my trusty Netgear in - get something reliable and configurable.

I'm bumping you to an 8.3. You obviously have a strong sense of self and you are very much in control of your sensual side. You're the kind of girl that guys are willing to beat each other senseless over, just hoping for a few moments of attention from you. Congratulations and shame on you. you are a slut in the very best possible meaning of the word!

It goes something like this:

1) Sign up to BT
2) Receive truly APPALLING speed levels from them for months
3) Get driven to distraction calling Indian call centres for help every 5 minutes
4) Hold a Router-Roasting party in your back garden by dousing the thing in lighter fluid and dancing around its burning plastic shell whilst making loud whooping noises of pure joy
5) Switch to Virgin Broadband and
6) Subsequently never have any issues with your internet service EVER AGAIN*

until #1 starts all over but with the word Virgin in it instead when it drops for no reason every 20 min's or bombs to 1 mb for 3 days - all to get the indian call centre saying 'it's not a problem it tests fine.

they all seem crap and i don't know about BT's looking after customers but any new customer can get my Virgin speed connection for a 1/4 of the price i pay and have been for 10 yrs now

service sux
price sux
customer loyalty sux
reliability sux

but - there aint no better out there as usual
