But why on earth should you:
1- get a free client AND
2- get free access to SL AND
3 - get free linden dollars AND
4- get free land

It's called ... retainership, which is key in today's economy.

That would be the case if the chances are big that by doing this, the 'customers' eventually bring in money. Giving free accounts land and money, brings them money, not Linden Labs.

Too many people seem to want to have a free lunch. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Great! can we now have another TANSTAAFL vs. TINSTAAFL debate? The last one was awesome!

Love (and I see you're a TINSTAAFL man)

P.S. Sorry - couldn't resist!

Chances are that free land and money would entice more new users to join sl, which would ultimately lead to more money for LL since a percentage of those new users who were enticed by the free land and money would ultimately realize that they now want premium accounts and to upgrade their land holdings.

As for givin' the oldbie basic account users free land, it may either convince them to come back to SL or make them rethink leaving. ( i.e. - retainership)

I don't see either outcome as a bad thing for LL. Those who are in it for the free lunch ain't in it for the SL, so let them do as they please & gtfo asap.

jmho,

(I dunno what TANSTAAFL stands for, but if it has anything to do with getting me some free land, I'm all in :P:P )

From The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, by Robert Heinlein

"Gospodin," he said presently, "you used an odd word earlier--odd to me, I mean..."
"Oh, 'tanstaafl.' Means ~There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.' And isn't," I added, pointing to a FREE LUNCH sign across room, "or these drinks would cost half as much. Was reminding her that anything free costs twice as much in long run or turns out worthless."

"An interesting philosophy."

"Not philosophy, fact. One way or other, what you get, you pay for."

Hmm like maybe a SIM that has lets say has 1/4 of the prims a regular sim has **and only costs 1/4 of the cost of a regular SIM** ...oh eh uhm wait.

I suggest the Lindens lower tier for everyone!

Return stipends to basic accounts and raise them for paid accounts!

Put some money into the hands of the players, and let's get this SL economy moving again!

errmmmm.......
Well, unless I appear to be living on a different planet to LL.
I thought the cost of Hardware (Hard drive space, Memory etc etc) was falling all the time.
So, why should prims per parcel and the price of land not keep falling as the costs for creating, storing and running this data continues to fall?

Probably because they continue to store every item in the inventory of every person & bot who's logged in since 2003, even if it was only once.

Funny you should say this, as it reminded me about something I wondered about many months ago.

Say I make a T-Shirt with "Piggies Are Great" written on the front.
I upload the texture and make it into a T-shirt and it's now an item of clothing in my Inventory.

Or actually, it's some data sitting on the hard drive at LL (somehwre!)

Now say that everone in SL is desperate top have a copy of my T-Shirt.

So I send 70,000 people copies of it, so they can all walk tall and proud :)

do we think that LL actually stores 70,000 copies of my T-shirt for the 70,000 members. Actually storing the same data 70,000 times over.

Or, might there just be 1 (with backups of course) actual piece of data on a hard drive somewhere and what people in their inventorys actually have (including myself) is a pointer to where (on this 1 data storage drive) the Tshirt data is held?

So, there are not actually millions of copies of the same data all over the place, just 1 main storage valt and everyone inventory is just pull of pointers that link to the correct data on this device?

anyone know?

(apologies if I've not made my question clear enough)

No, your inventory is (roughly) a list of UUIDs on the inventory server, pointing to actual data on the asset server.
