From: Tod69 Talamasca Extra Boob!! I'm loving Windlight! It's like SL went from 1998 to 2004 in a short step! Can't wait for Havok 4!!! IN another 5-10 years, SL will be up-to-date with the graphic qualities I've come to expect in 2008! How is a more poorly lit Avatar a step forward? Or do you mean the ground and the water? So the ground and the water moved to 2004, but the avatar stayed in 1998.

So the ground and the water moved to 2004, but the avatar stayed in 1998. I'm glad I showed up in 2007. I have no Idea what things looked like in 1998 or 2004. But the Avatar lighting does seem darker with Windlight, at least on my 3 Year Old Clunker. Otherwise it does look nice overall, it might be worth the hardware upgrade when it becomes mandatory.

From: Natalie Paderborn I wouldn't panic, honestly. I love Windlight, and I think my av actually looks better under the Windlight lighting (examples of vanity here - http://flickr.com/photos/14772404@N08/), and that's without any fancy uber-tweaked settings and only occasionally using my very low-watt facelamp. I've not had any complaints with my skin either. I think those with lighter/minimal baked on shading will be the way to go, skin-wise. Mari (Who is trying not to promote Robin Sojourner's skins *too* blatantly)

I have been a bit baffled by this personally; I must say that I just look like I did before, only more realistically lit. In many cases it is a distinct improvement, without some of the awful shadowing that made me look like I'd just staggered out of the gin parlour.

Staggering out of the gin parlour is a look I've been trying to recreate for as long as I've been in SL. We need to compare notes, chap.

Whether avatars look better or worse in WindLight is a mixed bag, and partly a matter of taste. The lighting effects on them (and everything else) are certainly more dramatic; you will see a lot more difference between the side of your body facing the sunlight and the side that is in shadow. And as somebody pointed out, getting prim parts to match skin well seems to be somewhat easier in WindLight than in the standard viewer -- but you WILL have to readjust them.
The one thing that clearly WILL need to change is face lights. Pre-WindLight face lights are WAY too strong in the WindLight viewer, especially at night. If you choose to keep the effect at all, please turn it down!

I doubt those with Male avatars will notice the change as much.
Male shapes do not have the same mesh problems that female shapes do.
And thus the fact that the new lighting shows the problems more easily wont be noticeable by you.
You don't have to believe me,
but you might want to consider I have spent .. ohh ..
Several hundred hours working with the female shape in SL...
Its just possible I might know what I am talking about.

Or that if you talk enough, you are bound to get something right.

You're right, I'm male and running windlight most of the time, I still see the same people using the non windlight viewer too and buggered if I can spot the difference
