What would you build if you had all the money and time in the world?

Portmeirion. The whole thing.

Um, presuming hiring an actual good builder with the money is allowed. :)

Oh, so many things! Here are two:

> Arches National park. Two sims, one a very realistic one with trails between recognizable arches, and the other a fantasy version ... what Mother Nature would do at Canyonlands if gravity didn't get in the way!

> Granite, Oregon. Not only the small ghost town community (in its entirity it would fit in a single sim), but also its high lonesome site. http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/or/granite.html

As for ones that already exist, how about Mont St. Michel sim? It is beautifully done.

I love the idea of a ghosttown, and yes, Mont St. Michel is superb!

I think port meirion has been done.
I visited a Prisoner sim.

And er, if anyone needs a builder, I'm for hire ;)

I daresay, the both the slums and the fancy houses would belie the real truth of that era: miles upon miles upon miles of agriculture and farmland.

The era had several truths ;)
But yes, I'd also wouldn't mind creating a historical agricultural community.
I've just watched 'The Victorian Farm' on the BBC and wouldn't mind recreating something like that.

My head is bursting with ideas for sims, all of them historically themed as that is my passion.
I have Lindens but not enough time to build all my plans!
So far I have build one sim, the 1920s Berlin Project and I love building and maintaining it.
But if... if...

Soooo... if you had plenty of lindens and time, what would you build?

I'd create a neighbourhood in Victorian London, not the fancy romantic bits we see in SL, but the East End, Whitechapel, the backstreets.

Perhaps in this thread you find people with the same sort of ideas and you work together :)

everything this.

1) The Discovery spaceship from 2001, complete with rotating habitat ring.

2) Extending the mission a bit, I have always fantasized about a Raiders of the Lost Ark world - mid 1930's. Imagine getting lost in a dust storm, or boarding a Panamanian freighter bound for Argentina, or visiting a Cuban casino while dodging Nazi spies. Discussing the fruit business with a Mafia Don or exploring the Amazon in an airship or witnessing collective life in Russia. It just seems people lived bigger lives back then...

There would be adventures provided by locally hired content providers, so you might have a Vietnamese giving you clues to an adventure where you're surviving under French colonialism, or a Finn giving you skiing and sharpshooting instructions for a Russia-Finnish winter war campaign.

I'll let you know when I've got it built. I'll be building it in Blue Mars, where a truly large-scale build can be done for $30/month.

Unfortunately my time can't be discounted so easily, so it may be a while.

I'd love to build a huge complicated ecosystem. I really miss Svarga, but I think I'd build something a little less literal if I was doing it - it would look and behave in a more alien fashion. I did try once on a very small scale but got scared off by all the "grey goo" warnings on the scripting wiki.

It was an island with flowers, insects, birds and weather systems ... all interdependent. It was also a really beautiful, tranquil place. It's one of the first places I found inworld - I used to practically live there.

There's a good article here ...

I'd have a 4-sim island, which I'd try and landscape realistically. It would have beaches, two imagative clubs - one enclosed and one open-air, art installations, a restaurant where people could sit and chat while they eat as an alternative to dancing.

And I'd like to include a replica of Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset.

We do not have all the money in the world,Only what it takes to build these..ok we might have a lil extra :D

Time is on my side ,40 hours a week RL and 40 hour SL a week = black bags under the eyes is back in as the new look!!

3 years of learning trying ,failing, trying ,failing,trying....I get it some where in there!!

1 of the 10 types we make
https://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=1698484

It involves scripting, sculpting, texture, product lay out, marketing and...... oh yeah lil luck!!

The quest to make what you always wanted starts in the mind and finds its way to your fingers.........

Time and money are only factors in this....never set a limit on them!!

If I had the time and money, I'd set up a frum Jewish area within Second Life. Frum Jews are observant. I hate the denominational name, Orthodox. Currently the only Jewish group I found within Second Life does not keep Shabbos (concert scheduled for after sundown on Friday!) I dropped it like a hot potato.

I would build the main gathering spaces, something simple and not too photo real. I'd do some of the landscaping since I love making trees, flowers and plants.

I'd give away parcels of land to those who wanted to settle.

I'd also set up the rules, dress code, rules about nasty language etc.... I'd ask residents not to login during Shabbos in their time zone. We might get some trouble from the charedi/haredi, but most of them wouldn't go near Second Life anyway. Conservative, Traditional, and some Orthodox Jews might try Second Life though if we had a community that catered to our needs.

actually I did think of one thing.... Aquarius... to scale, including the beach ring.
overview

scale reference

I used to have some actual design schematics somewhere... I beleive I worked it out to between 9 and 16 sims for the central structure

That's an entirely laudable aim. SL tends to one of two extremes in its depiction of urban environments of any kind: it's either impossibly squeaky clean, or over-the-top disgusting. In the former category, I'd include Virtual Harlem, a sim that I love, but that doesn't even begin the communicate the gritty reality of the inner city ghetto in the 1920s. In the latter, you can include most of the urban "rape sims": even ignoring for a moment the provision for some highly questionable simulations of violence at such places, they are revolting beyond any reasonably realistic measure.

Berlin 1920 is, I think, I pretty good compromise, and I am sure that YOU would do a superb job of it, but I'd be willing to bet you that, in most hands, a depiction of Whitechapel would end up as a Victorian version of The Crack Den or Stepford, complete with pose balls permitting visitors to slaughter and gut young prostitutes.

On your recommendation, I did go visit Virtual Harlem; I was disappointed, it was squeaky clean, and empty too. i went prepared to buy land, if that was an option, or to rent something, to spend time there but didn't, just wasn't inspired. The literature did say it was an educational sim, but I couldn't find any classes listed. There is another, grittier modern urban Harlem in SL but on tp'ing in, two steps and I was hit by ban lines in every direction, I got discouraged and left there, too.

Yes, you're right about Virtual Harlem. I'm not sure why it hasn't attracted more people, but it is, indeed, usually empty. I love The Savoy Ballroom there, for instance, but rarely dance there because it's just always utterly bereft of people. And yes, I really think they are somewhat falsifying the historical record by leaving it so clean, neat, and safe.

I've been tempted to rent there myself, but haven't for exactly the reasons you suggest. I wonder why it is that people are happy to rent in horrible residential subdivisions, but so reluctant to do so in historical sims? I'm sure it's one of the reasons that they go under so often. There was a lovely sim called Ayreshire (I think) representing the Scottish Highlands in or around the 18th century that had cottages to rent: all of them were empty, and the sim itself is gone now.

First of all, I would have a mini-continent.

One sim would have an Oz like the classic movie. One would be made like Toontown Online but with livable houses and shops. One would be made like SimCity3000. One would be a perfect Kinkadesque locale.

I dont have time money or the health to pursue it.

There is a third requirement missing from the OP question. Talent & skill.

I guess if I had all the money 'in the world' I could hire those.

So, I'd do more of what I'm currently doing which is, helping newbs and people who are in SL without tons of funds. People who can't really afford to buy or rent land of their own.

It's actually very difficult to find anyone who looks noobish or who is a true noob these days or who WANTS help, other than a place to chill. And free stuffs.

I'd also love to have several or more story telling sims. Sims that were a total immersive experience. It would require heavy scripting and top quality visuals, so those skills being lacking so far, and the money running those would take, lacking too, are what's stopped me thus far. I get ideas all the time, though.

Kinda like in real life, actually. Ideas all my life...but life hasn't placed me in a way to take them to fruition. (Actually SL is more equal opportunity than RL is, in many ways.)
