Apparently this person seems to think I am a copycat builder. At first I was outraged but then it made me laugh so I thought I'd share it with all of you.

So does this mean we can file DMCA's against ANYTHING that looks like something else? I better get started (kidding)

I agree... from surfing that persons pictures they think EVERYONE is out to copy them. Funny thing is... the stuff he claims is being copied.... are every day things like... light posts and old style record players. So Lame.

Those subs dont really look alike at all other than the fact that they're both subs. I made a clock once, (twice actually), but the first one I made was based on one a friend had seen and showed me. I snapped some photos of it, went home, and rebuilt it manually, I copybotted nothing at all about, I simply made mine look like the one I had seen. The owner eventually saw it on XStreet (SLX back then), and IM'd me a private message on SLX complaining that I stole her design.

Big deal.

This goes on in SL and RL every day. Take cell phones for example. Motorola came out with the V3 Razr and every cell phone that followed was a super thin, metal cased cell phone. Even now, everyone's out there making touch screen, iPhone-like phones to catch up with Apple.

As long as you're not out there duplicating the work of others using copy-bot type techniques (and building something similar by hand based on viewing the build of another is NOT copybotting), then you're totally in the clear. Tell whoever is complaining to to wake up and smell the coffee, those builds look virtually nothing alike in texture or shape, and even if they looked identical, copyING is not copyBOTTING.

You are right... the person who accused me is a big baby. Plain and simple. I was the second person in SL to build Cylon Centurion MK-II's. Shortly after someone else made one using a lot of my building techniques... then another person.... then another person. Then I was the first to build the Cylon Centurion model 0005 from the Razor series..... and soon after someone built theirs. I'm always updating my builds so in the end my builds are still my builds. If I see someone copy me "note for note" then I'll be upset.... but I dont mind someone being influenced by me. I don't scream copybot everytime I see something that looks like my stuff...LOL

Whether copying is copyright violation depends on how close the copy is, what the intent was, and what kind of original work was present in the original. If you have two people making copies of the same public domain work (such as the appearance of a 60 year old submarine) then you have to get pretty damn close, down to details of construction, before any court in the land would support a claim of copyright violation.

I recall this particular blog came up in the forums before, and while it seems that there probably are some instances where the blogger's work was copied, he or she makes claims that are far far broader than can be supported.

I found that page a week or two ago and couldn't help it, I had to comment, some people are just to precious, inspiration is not the same as copying.

on the contrary, in the context Shayna was refering to, no IP theft occurs. there is no trademark nor patent infringement, and you can't copyright a style or a structure. in the sense that was being talked about even reverse engineering doesn't apply even if it could be covered by the limited provision of that. it's just as legal as knock off perfumes. otherwise apple would be out suing all the touchscreen phones similar to iPhones.
