From: Marin Mielziner I took some people to task for the flip answers on the Swansea survey... but I'll admit it.. you guys are right. It IS never ending and most surveys presuppose that SL is populated mainly by gamers, deviants, n'er do wells, and 35 yr olds living in their parents' basement. Hey I take offense to the 35 year old living in the parents basement... oh wait. I am only 33. nevermind

From: Brenda Connolly Jesus Christ on a Pony! It never ends. What is making all you people decide to use SL as a study project, and why don't you spend some time actually using it before you start prodding the regular users? because traditionally scientists dont take the rats out to dinner before the vivisection... dang i hate outdated traditions

From: Ghosty Kips I think I'm fairly justified in doubting you. I've emailed the supposed person to verify they did the posting - should I have sent them a survey instead?

From: Marcel Flatley @LL: Could we please have a separate forum category for surveys? It could be like the product announcements forum, where no comments are allowed.

If she's a professor of marketing it's academic market research, of course.

Oh Joanna, I dont care what you are surveying but get out of forum now while you still have your wits about you, you poor woman. Or read Rosser's thread and see what happened to him. Don't say you weren't warned.

Look what happened to Dr David Markus *aka James T Kirk, Jr. He added proto matter to the matrix of the Genesis Planet and look what happened. It wound up getting him killed. Klingon Bastard.

I think I'm gonna develop a standard answer for any further surveys and studies that pop up here. It's gonna be witty and highly intelligent and carry the deepest of possibly meanings, and it will even make the surveyors go "Whoa! Now that's what I wanted to get out of posting this!".
*sits down to compose said reply*
*clears throat*
*reads off notecard*
FUCK OFF.
Thank you.

You know other online communities require a researcher to get clearance with the company before starting surveys. Most make it very hard if not impossible to do. I THOUGHT LL used to require clearance. I know good and well TSO did and several others did.
I am sort of wondering how this research got past human subjects committee without clearance.

It wasn't so bad til the last page.
It is also obviously about phishing to see if ads should be part of virtual worlds and who thinks what about that (male or female and age brackets).
These surveys always seem to ask the same questions.

Hi, Joanna. By now, you've realized that you posted at a bad time...we've been rather over-surveyed this week and the lab rats are revolting. Wait...that didn't come out quite right... Instead of a survey, I suggest the Jane Goodall approach. Join SL and come live with your experimental subjects in the field for a while. I won't take your survey, but I'll be happy to be your guide. IM me when you arrive in world.

Maybe new forum (unofficial) rule could be: will answer surveys if the surveyor rezzes in a Tarzan or Jane outfit. We get to be apes, and re-enact the 2001 montage. If they can handle that sportingly - then maybe.

I happen to know of one WoW respondent who just *loves* advertising and wishes it could be everywhere in WoW.

To the OP:
If you are a professor, as you claim, then why not join Second Life and experience it. No conclusions from survey based research are valid as survey results can be skewed by inaccurrate, read: made up, responses.
Any good acedemic knows that a theory without repeated experimentation and duplicatable results is a useless assumption. If you really insist on others doing your research for you the there is a Search function on the forums and I am quite certain that the keyword 'survey' will return hundreds of lines of response for dozens of surveys.
Sorry to be so blunt, but the survey BS is getting out of hand and is really a useless way of performing research which produces an even more useless result.
