For several reasons this forum seems a bit odd for some users (like me) who wonder why the URLlinks arent highlighted and clickable as they should be.

Strife Onizuka worked on a script to fix this. See the main thread posted by Strife Onizuka for futher help if you like to use another browser such as Chrome.

/327/b2/188445/3.html

However, here the quick installation instructions and the links: So your new browser works in one minute.

1. Download and install Firefox
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

2. After Firefox has been installed, download the addon Greasemonkey
https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/748

3. After addon has been added, download and install this script
http://home.comcast.net/~mailerdaemon/bbcodeintext.user.js

Now your SL Forum is like any other on the web again.

I add some more info about the add-on

Greasemonkey

Greasemonkey is one of the most versatile add-ons in the Firefox universe. Once installed, you can run custom scripts that extend the behavior of every aspect of the browser. Greasemonkey scripts, available at Userscripts.org can block advertising, cookies and alerts, manage RSS feeds or add functionality sites like Flickr, Digg, Amazon, del.icio.us, Google and Wikipedia.

I'm a bit dim. Once the script is downloaded, how does one install it? I have Firefox, and I have all the updates (which I think includes Greasemonkey)

Use IE7Pro to do the same thing
10-15-2008 13:23
You can use IE7Pro add-in as the IE equivalent to Greasemonkey. It's free too. Go here to get it:

http://www.ie7pro.com/

After it is installed look for the "User Scripts" section.

I don't think IE7 Pro will actually run Strife's script. I suspect that Chrome's Greasemetal also won't run the script either. The last time I tried to get Opera to run it, Opera wouldn't run it either, despite older versions of Opera having run it just fine. It would be good to hear from someone that's tried the scripts with these browsers extensions and got it working, rather than just getting a report that it ought to work.

Greasemonkey is an "add-on" to Firefox, it doesn't come with a standard Firefox install. To add it you can use the Firefox Tools Add-ons option, then put Greasemonkey in as the search term, or take the Browse All Add-ons option and search for it there. Once you have the Greasemonkey add-on installed, you go to userscripts.org, and put in bbcodeintext as the search term, and click the install button. The stickied thread has instructions in it, I believe.

I use Firefox with the Linkification addon, works perfectly in all sites I go to. You can find it in the addons :)

BTW, Flashblock is another great addon, makes browsing so much better and Morning Coffee is wonderful for comic strip fiends like me :)

I don't understand how to install this. I routinely accept all Firefox addons, so I should be up to date (and I remember seeing a "greasemonky";). So, given that, how do I install the script?

Read post #5 in the Strife stickied thread -- did you do that?

Okies, I still have no clue about how I was supposed to install that script, but I finally found greasemonkey on my browser. Now all the links work for me.

Gah, I really hate computers some days.

It works fine in latest version of both Opera and Chrome. I wouldn't have posted in the stickie or made an announcement in Resident Answers about Greasemetal if it had not worked.

Hmm therefore I have posted this threat beside of the sticky thread to offer an easy going walk through

If you just follow the links you are done in just one minute and the last step is the script that will be automatially downloaded and added to the addon greasemonkey inside the new firefox.

:)

Nice it works for you- finally

If you like Mozilla, I strongly recommend taking the next step and trying Linux. It's a safer OS.

I wonder when Chrome will get page zoom and thus be useful to me for displaying this web page. Greasemetal and Strife's BBCode in Text script appear to be working fine in Chrome.

Oh, in the event anyone uses Flock, Greasemonkey works fine in Flock, and so does Strife's script.

Greasemonkey is not working with the newly released Firefox 3.1b1 Beta with the advanced Javascript engine enabled. There's probably a way to get around this but I haven't bothered yet.

Anyone have the script working in IE7 with IE7Pro?

The new Opera skin... yuch.

I've just installed Opera 9.6 and have the script in the appropriate folder and it is still not working.
The Opera error console reports an error at :
Line 13 of User JS script

if(!GM_addStyle) GM_addStyle = function(css){

Same error it's reported for a long time in Opera.

Anyone know if the functions in the scripts that start with "GM" are greasemonkey specific functions?

That doesn't solve the underlying problem in terms of security, which really can't be dealt with unless you don't use the IE rendering engine, at which point, why use IE at all?

Ctrl + works for me for zooming & my scroll wheel moves the page up and down also in Chrome, yet I have seen some entries of people saying that they can't???

Chrome doesn't have page zoom, it just increases the text size. For me, at least.

The script available currently at userscripts.org will work in Opera if you make the following changes:

Change
From: someone
if(!GM_addStyle) GM_addStyle = function(css){

To
From: someone
//if(!GM_addStyle)
GM_addStyle = function(css){

This may have other consequences, I don't know, I don't do this sort of thing much.
Possibly Jesse is using an older version of the script. Strife does report having modified it since it was first made.

Yep, I had to dif the scripts to see just exactly what I had done at some point in the past. Hey! No scripts are safe from me and my tinkering!

As far as Firefox 3.1 BETA; NOTHING works with it yet. all add-ons disabled etc even when you enable the updated java engine in it. It had been a couple of years where I was not running FF but I recently started again. I do love some of the addons but sorry guys, is just way too slow for me, even the new beta takes a couple of minutes to load up. I know some people do not like Chrome but it is nice to hit a button and see something load IMMEDIATELY, it really is that fast. Learning more about creating my own gm scripts now so that hopefully I can add even more functionality to it.

There aren't any security issues as long as you keep it updated with the latest security patches. Same goes for Firefox and Opera which also have security issues if you don't keep them patched.
