Joss: yep
A few tips how I manage my inventory, perhaps one or two will get inspired:
First off: enable sorting items by date, enable sorting of folders alway alphabetically, and I personally prefer the system folders not to always be on top of the list.
Now, additionally to the standard folders I have: clothing, body parts (think that's actually a standar, gadgets, furniture, vehicles, temp, and probably one or two that I can't remember off the top of my head.
--
Body Parts: Contains subfolders like 'horns, 'wings' etc. either the items lay in those directly, or there are subfolders in case they're little sets of items, with the set name as the foldername.
It also contains the folder 'AVs', with subfolders with the AV names.
so, body parts -> horns, body parts -> AVs -> medusa for example
Additionally it contains the folder !base, in which I have the worn shape, skin, default hair and jewely etc of my standard AV. additionally, anything that is made of prims is put into the subfolder 'prim' in there.
Clothing: Contains folders like !jewelry, !glasses etc. on top. Those directly contain a list of that kind of items, without subfolders. Below the !folders are folders containing classic literal clothes. They are named like the company/creator. Inside those, are subfolders named like the individual outfits, which contain all the parts of the outfit that I actually like to wear. so the structure is clothing -> company/creatorname -> outfitname
If an outfit comes in several 'styles', each gets their own outfitname-style folder.
that way, if I know an outfit's name, I can do a quick search -> rightclick folder -> add all to outfit, and zing..I'm wearing it. And I exactly know what I do and don't have by a creator when shopping.
gadgets: contains anything useful, techish, fun, misc, whatever. contains the subfolders 'fun', 'unscripted', 'food'. Anything not fitting those categories gets tossed into the folder directly, and anything that consists of more than one object or has a big manual gets its own subfolder named like the gadget/thingie in question. manuals get put into the thing's folder. Freebies make it into that folder too. it's almost a 'misc' folder.
Vehicles: plain ol' vehicles folder. Same handling as with 'gadgets' when it comes to the decision of making vehiclename subfolders or tossing them in directly.
Furniture: pretty much like vehicles.
the default folders: get used like those two above pretty much, for their approprite type of content.
Big exception is the objects folder:
Aside of new items landing in there before getting sorted/moved, it is also the 'personal creations' folder in a way. it contains subfolders with the names of friends that have given me creations of their own, and also contains the folder 'own' which holds my own made stuff..subdivided into some categories.
temp folder: anything recently bought gets tossed in there for unpacking, tossing out landmarks, resorting etc.
and last but not least: 'my inventory' has a !packs folder right on top
it contains several subfolders named like those above..gadgets, clothes, bodyparts etc..but all that gets tossed in there are the packaged versions of the items if the package was copy-okay/the package was no.copy but the items inside were, and/or folders of outfits of which I outsourced some parts I didn't like from the actual 'clothing' main folder.

There, hope that helps. Yeah, it takes a long time to sort/set up initially, but I manage a 20k item inventory with ease now by this.
