I don't know I am not much of fan for login and get non-stop group announcements
every few hours a event is happening I wish there was better way to communicate than that.

Sometimes I would like the option for my im's to go private mail box though sometimes.

I avoid groups and joining them but sometimes is nice to belong to certain ones
and hear announcement reminders but sometimes it just way too much.

Yeh I wish there was an option to set allowable announcements OR group IMs to a certain # per day. If you are away from SL even a few days you come back to like 20 at times, the rest are capped, including things/IMs/gifts from friends! That isn't right. I wonder if clubs and other groups KNOW how much they put people off in sending more than one reminder a day let alone several. Why not maybe send a link to the events for that week on a group's blog or something instead of countless spam per week of the same thing...or several announcements per day about how great an event is and come on down. Even places I like, that gets annoying and spammy.

Too bad LL couldn't cap those but specifically to a place. Let 1 or 2 through or let us set how many per specific group. Then we have to click to see more.

You can already get IMs sent to your inbox but you also get it in world if that was what you meant. But at least if your IM gets capped you know about it...otherwise, group spam caps and you never know your friend sent that IM to you at all.

Yep I agree - sometimes it's just way too much. There's advertising and promotion and then there is spamspamspam.

I am one of those that will be using this piece of software because I can use it on the go with my laptop that does not do SL. since Ive already installed it on my main computer the slim client now has all my freinds in it. But I will say this Ive tryed talking to a couple of people and it seems that they also need this to talk with me. but this is improvment for when I am on the move and want to keep in touch with certain people

they need slim or the slim first look client for you to talk to them

when the slim first look becomes the main client, slim users will be able to contact anyone on their list

the biggest thing we have to remember is this is a new thing, therefor still in beta and still buggy as hell LOL

I got it, I never had to give anyone my SL password, other than SL when I logged in to the slim first look client

NEVER gave vivox my password for SL, not once not at all

Group chat is a large part of help groups such as NCI. They wont go away

I maxed on my bandwidth limits ... Wildblue. In case you're wondering. :|

My sympathies.

Been there. Escaped as SOON as I found an alternative. In my area, though, Hughesnet was not an alternative because their "fair access" policy (euphamism for "when we said 'unlimited' we were lying";) is even WORSE than Wildbluedisconnect's policy.

The Lab is a telco wannabe. That's why it's suddenly a Linden core competency to manage a fiber ring. And that's why voice is such a smashing success--whenever a board member talks about it. So, hey, if they push IM traffic around with the voice, they'll be almost like Skype.

Totally agree that using closed third party software for IM is quaint from both technology and business perspectives. God only knows what they're thinking.

I'm not sure I understand, do you mean removing IM from the SL viewer and making it a standalone client?
No, I mean removing the existing IM protocol and switching to Vivox's servers for ALL IM services. You would still use in-world chat, it just wouldn't have anything to do with Linden Labs any more.

Its something I will never use and I will never turn on voice.
Once the First Look client becomes the main client you may not have an option.

I could see replacing their homegrown IM/Presence server with a third party one inworld, but I cannot see getting rid of it completely.
That's what I'm talking about. Going from the Linden Labs IM software in the SL client to this new Vivox software.

Its something I will never use and I will never turn on voice. Its my preference. As far as being able to IM from outside SL I have no need for that, SL is fun but it cant replace my RL. When I log out of SL I want to be out of SL.

Not if LL shuts down the existing IM system to relieve load on the group server.

On the plus side, you might be able to get more groups.

What some open source client might want to do is to add libpurple to the OS client so you can use *any* IM from inside SL.

Or none at all? Hmmm that might be a blessing in the long run. :p

Doesn't it sound like they're merely relocating the path IMs make? (o.o)

From what I see, IMs will still exist as we see them, they'll just pass through a different server cluster... Maybe one with less lag... Maybe one with more connectivity options... Maybe one that can allow more groups... Maybe... =^-^=

You're not listening to me! I always have an option.

Yes, but doing it in a way that will make things harder for the open source client and servers, make things harder for people working behind firewalls, and not solving half the problems that the original request for a "lightweight IM client" was intended to solve.

Ah, I see. I haven't thought about it.

One reason TO do this is that doing a good presence server is HARD. SL's is primitive and, if they are going to get deeper into collaboration and particularly if they go deeper into interworking with 3rd party grids, it needs a revamp.
