Merge SL and Rappelz! Be neat to see Blue Crystals and Rock Turtles chasing people on a Sim! ![]() Go to a Linden owned sandbox.. you'll see plenty of things chasing people on a sim then ![]() I'll go with: Working reliably and stably. I'll settle with: Not losing inventory/textures due to asset servers. *puts turtle neck shirts on the list of things for hubby to do* _____________________

Aside from the desire for greater stability, the great new feature I'd like to see, after Windlight and Havoc4 have settled in, is proper ray-traced shadows and light-blocking. Failing that, even a simpler shadow system that only changed every hour or two of SL time or even a fixed overcast-light diffuse shadow system would be better than what we have now, which is no shadows (apart from avatar foot-puddles!).

I'd love it if LL gave a more welcoming experience to newbies.
The basis first, then my wishlist. -------------------------------------------------------------- I've got a moderate sort of ordinary desktop PC. Pentium 4, 3 Ghz, with 1G of memory and SATA drives. ADSL that delivers a steady downstream of 1.7 It also happens to have an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS. I really hate to think how slow my SL would be without that. When I started last January, I had just the on-board Intel 2D graphics. That was OK. The experience then was good. I could use a 128m draw distance. However, every new First Look crashed the drivers, so despite the final releases being OK, I bit the bullet and bought the NVIDIA. I suspect that with my current hardware and broadband, I should be getting an above-average performance. I made an alt a while back just to see what the current newbie experience is like. I had to abandon the poor thing in the very early stages because SL was so generally laggy. I don't understand how anyone would put up with the experience that I had. I went back again a few days ago. The old OI was structured, but allowed people to rush through. The new OI seems to set a set of tests before allowing escape. The path through them is less structured however. Overall, I found it more confusing than the old one. On a positive note, an unstructured OI is a better preparation for being dumped into an unstructured SL. There was a good tutorial section on using Search. However, the absence of an explanation of Mainland v. Estate was a *definite* failure. I found the vehicles on the Move station to be laggy and frustrating. That was extremely off-putting. The one thing that absolutely *drove me MAD* was the OI HUD. I !!!HATE!!! SL displays of text as a graphic. They take FOREVER to rezz. I have to go back to check out the experience in the Welcome areas. My knee-jerk impression was that I was put into a group of avatars that - were definitely not newbies judging by their avatars v. my standard avatar - were not in the Welcome area primarily to welcome newbies. It would have been helpful and nice to be landed into something more like NCI. The wishlist: -------------------------------------------------------------- Newbies are the lifeblood of SL. They deserve better care and loving on their first experience. I'm beginning to get concerned for the live of SL. It's seems way emptier that it was almost a year ago. It's bigger, but it's emptier. What would I like SL to ... (in no particular order.......maybe) Make the OI experience workable for someone who is not on LL's corporate intranet bandwidth and who does not have a high-end PC. Lose the HUD. Use plain text. Design the thing with an assumption of network lag and lower-end PCs. Lose the standard walk. Take it out and shoot it, and then incinerate the corpse. Gather all the ashes, and nuke them - a number of times. Honestly!! WTF ??????? Lose the poor choice of avatar and lose the dependance gawdawful standard slider hair and shape. Give people a choice from a wide range of appearances at the OI/HI stage. They can get such things as freebies, but since there's not a commercial competitive factor, why not do a decent selected freebie 'shop' at the end of OI stage. Do tutorials there, like how to open a box. Explain attachments. Give people a good structured introduction to the kind of avatar modification facilities that are to be found in SL. Explain how the fun stuff works. Nope - I don't mean bonking. I don't recall seeing a poseball anywhere. There was a seat to sit on to practice using Snapshot, but that was about it. The vehicles in OI were sooooo sad, laggy and difficult to control. Explain the culture. Explain that it isn't the Sims or some game, where everything is there to be used. There is a sense of private space in SL that should be respected. Don't put people in a situation where they are made to feel stupid or 'bad' due to their inexperience and innocence. Have welcome areas staffed by volunteers that want to help newbies. Have a Linden shift dedicated to keeping an eye on how each welcome area is running under non-SL staff. Zero tolerance for griefers. A tight rein on grifters (of the spiritually-challenged persuasion) -------------------------------------------------------------- In summary: I have a feeling that LL have lost sight of the users as ordinary mortals. It's not the users' faults that there are 'too many' of them for LL to handle. In 2008, I'd love to see LL concentrate on giving the ordinary Joe/Jane with fairly ordinary technology a good experience. Have the bells and whistles as options. _____________________

55 Day old Newbie wishes for:
12-25-2007 14:17
Simple things, really. (If I CAN do any of these, but just don't know it, please enlighten me)
1. I wish I could "save" a furniture or room arrangement of my living areas, like my saved outfits. 2. I wish I could walk my AV while windows such as search and inventory are open. I am constantly minimizing, maximizing, looking for correct windows, typing in chat when I should be in IM and vise-verse. 3. I wish there was a CONSTANT way to walk my AV so I can see it walking (toward me). 4. I would like access to an entire map of SL so I can see where Sims are in relation to one another. 5. I would like a record of where I've gone with teleports. Sometimes I visit a place but forget to get a LM, and can't remember where it was but wish I did so I could go back. 6. Speaking of going back, I wish UNDO would work for EVERYTHING that you do. At least up until a certain point like 5 backs max, or something. 7. I wish I could drape a blanket over an object like the bed, or install option for AV to be undercover (for sleeping, of course) I understand I may be able to make and edit my own but that's too difficult and I don't have a very good understanding of all of that yet. When given a notecard, I wish there was an automatic click to "save as" into your RL computer documents file. Someone said I could copy and paste but I can't seem to have that happen. When I highlight the notecard text, I right click to copy but either nothing comes up for me to choose copy or when I can choose copy, I go to my word document to paste but paste is a greyed out option, not allowing me to paste. There is so much vital info re: SL in notecards, but it's hard to read them all inworld. So can someone please tell me EXACTLY how I might get a hard copy? I have a guide on order, but there are many many notecards that are not included there. Otherwise, so far so good for me. My experience is so amazing that even the lag and crashes do not annoy me too much. Over all, it is my opinion that the good far outweighs the bad. Thank you to everyone who has/is/was/will be creating in SL. You are genious! ![]() P.S. It would be very convenient if I didn't have to drag out items to look in the general tab for prim count. I am "Renaming" most of my object and item folders to include the prim count. Like at the end of Black Chair, I will type 3p (for 3 prims). But it is annoying that I can't change some of the titles this way due to "no modify". Yes, I can understand no modifying of an object, but the title should editable. Thank you for your time. |

If I'm not mistaken, June 23rd 2008 will be the 5th anniversary of the public launch of Second Life. I think it would be nice if LL could mark the date with the launch of some exciting new goodies to enhance our SL experience.

LOL In other words, tell me your new concept so i can steal your ideas =) JK LOL true, but then again, I have heaps of ideas good and bad I know I can never make happen due to lack of skills/resources, so rather than take them to my grave with me I should share them, mainly because my head gets full otherwise. _____________________

The things I would like SL to be in 2008:
1. Not just stable, but super performance, on PCs that cost under 1500 dollars. 2. Increase of sim prims from 1500 to 2500 3. An offline tool for building - you can already script and design clothes offline (and test them). ~Snowman~ |

Have welcome areas staffed by volunteers that want to help newbies. Have a Linden shift dedicated to keeping an eye on how each welcome area is running under non-SL staff. There used to be a lot of people that hung out at welcome centers helping new residents. I used to do it. You're old enough that you probably remember it that way. But the welcome centers have become too hostile. The atmosphere is that of kids hanging out at the mall, without security or parents to keep them in check. Few have patience for it anymore. The Lindens will not keep an eye on welcome centers, and they have not empowered anyone else to do it. They've experimented with letting third parties control the signup experience. I don't know how that's going. I haven't heard anything about it in a while. The Sheep had a crack at it with a big publicity push with CBS, and what did they do? They directed newbies to their buddies' stores and their web store. As if newbies arrive wanting nothing but an opportunity to buy things. The only way the newbie experience will improve is if someone without a commercial interest is empowered to do something about it. This will cost Linden money to accomplish. I'm not hopeful. I can think of better ways to introduce newbies and better places to dump them than the welcome center malls, ideally giving them some nicely-described options on arriving, but this can't happen without Linden action, and there's no chance at all of actual Linden presence. |

Support joysticks and/or other gamepad like devices. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Flycam Seems someone got an X-Box 360 controller to work with the flycam control. The flycam isn't implemented very well, but you could try it out if you have a 360 controller. Two problems I have with flycam: 1. It reverts to non-flycam control when you hit the escape key, which I do all the time. 2. It goes whacky in areas of high lag. If you try a 360 controller, please post your experience here: /327/0a/193573/1.html |

And Flycam would be great for building but it doesn't stay still as far as I can get it to work on any setting I end up cammed in a corner of the sim. _____________________

Fix the avatar meshes to have better looking linden avatars. Clothes, hair, flexi-skirts... as part of the linden avatar. Make AOs built into the system instead of being worn as scripted item. Make a better search engine. Create a built-in sculpty editor. Defeat the bots. Bring back first land.

Have a good script editor.
oh my god the prions must have eaten my brain i just said "good" and "script editor" one right after the other. Have a way to do a screen capture in the client, crop it, caption it, compress it, edit it in the client, send it to snapzilla, flickr, zoho notes, wordpress.com, etc., wherever I like, with zero extra mouseclicks, keystokes, or hassle. Take a video clip from within the client and be able to to edit it, crop it, caption it, and store it on the net in SL ready form without leaving the client. _____________________
