Well, that's another thing. The gallery is a gallery, is inside of a big gallery building. In the past, I had the dancefloor on an adjoining parcel. Now, I've moved the dancefloor to the gallery parcel, right outside of the front door of the gallery, slightly off to the side actually. Was thinking having the dancefloor and reception closer, might help. You are saying, put it right inside of the gallery? I do have a room in the gallery that I could use for that, and had never thought of moving it inside. Seems that a dance reception, right there 'in your face' so to speak would be distracting to the artists and patrons?

Also, my original question, I see you said you DJ'd at events and nobody showed up. Did that make you feel bad? lol :( I don't want a DJ to leave my event feeling he wasted his time and will NEVER DJ for me again.....

It can be pretty disconcerting and a waste of time for a DJ to be in a place playing to nobody but staff. It actually happens at a lot of clubs, and a lot of DJs will simply quit the club, rather than work like that.

I don't particularly like playing to an empty room. It rarely happens, but when it does I do just sort of check out until the shift ends unless people start showing up.

No, I am not at all sure about the DJ. I've not been to that many DJ'd events. The one I"ve used was recommended by a group member; and not at all sure he had the personality to get folks onto the dance floor but not being that experienced myself, am not sure. Right now, I have a jazz piano stream playing on the parcel. It works, is nice for gallery viewing but obviously isn't dance music.

My advice before getting a DJ is to find a couple through classifieds, or through recommendations from friends/group members, contact the DJ and find out when the person is playing, and then go watch them in action.

I always ask people to do this with me. Even though I have a wide range of genres, I do like people to get a feel for who they might be hiring. I'm expensive enough that I'd rather they be happy before they hire me, even though most people are happy enough to get me back for future events. You also have to ask yourself whether or not you want a DJ who is on a mic. Believe me, I've heard some really bad voice DJs, and some very good ones. Often, the ones who don't do voice are just as good or better than the ones who do.

It helps to find someone who will take requests, and it also helps a DJ to know the kind of music s/he should play before the event. Do you want classical? Rock? Goth? Jazz? Let the DJ know. Do you have a set of artists you think your clients will like? Notecard them to the DJ.

The first question I always ask is "What kind of music do you like?"

Then I get a set together with that sort of music. However, once I'm at the event, if people start asking for something different, I scrap the set and start playing stuff that seems a bit more popular at the venue. In fact, there was one club I was told "Play Industrial" so I put together an Industrial set, but it rapidly turned into an 80s new wave and punk set because of what the listeners were in the mood for at the time.

One more question and then I promise to leave you alone, about this but it just occurred to me: Is it tacky for people to dance to a radio stream? (It is, isn't it?) lol

There are some private radio streams available that are not so commercialized. You can go to www.shoutcast.com and try a few out. But you don't want Trojan commercials coming on in the middle of your opening.

I don't think so (I hope you meant the plural 'you') - I've done it lots. After all, the DJ plays the recorded versions of songs also. And some don't talk much. And a radio DJ is a DJ also.

Dancing to ads is a bit weird, but I just turn sound off for a minute or two. Not a big deal.

Yes. Thank you for this very honest answer, which I already knew in my heart, was true.

I've been to a few gallery openings for which Trojan commercials would have been entirely appropriate.

Tried it. Got scared away by the giant pink penis, and the tacky strip malls (so to speak). :D
