There was a set of guidelines for "decency" that came to be called the Hays Code, after the guy who headed up the association. A notable rule was that, not only were even married couples portrayed as sleeping separately in twin beds but if they both happened to sit on the same bed for some reason during a scene both actors would have to keep at least one foot on the floor at all times so there would be no question about what was(n't) going on. _____________________
