So, nothing was allowed to be sold there yet some are whining that it was too commercial?

uhh... right.

I went there hoping to buy things. Couldn't do that. The cry "Too commercial!!" only serves to speak volumes about the complainer. The 'success=evil' mindset is sickening, and it's prevalence causes me to fear for the survival of the western society.
Take it easy. Folks were just saying it was not creative enough to warrant calling it a success. Most people posting here are virtual business owners and what they are talking about.

If you want to buy something go to a mall. I saw the sim board display and I teleported around the mainland until I found the store. I am now a happy, over-accessorized Sim Board Poser. So there is nothing stopping you from buying.

Who to blame? Who knows. Controversy on top of power plays and a year of 'planning' that was thrown out the window a month before the event was to start. Was there a year of planning? What did the third group of appointed organizers think their roles were? Why would anyone take the position as an organizer of a event that was to start in three weeks and then not acknowledge or take responsibility for all that went wrong? Who was in charge of this? The world may never know. But I do not think LL can stand a 6th year celebration that turns out like this. They best get some real large event planners on the case NOW and not treat it like they are gathering the junior prom committee.

anything you saw that you wanted to buy could be inspected, and the creators profile might have led you to their storefront by simply reviewing their picks. :D ;)
I've been doing that more and more lately... Too bad it can't be done for clothing layers. (T_T)

Speaking for myself, as one of those "whining," here's what I mean when I say "too commercial." There are some presentatioins that are thinly-masked copies of the presenters' stores. Many only have their vendors off in them thanks to multiple reminders to keep them off or see their build returned.

I don't mind comercialism. It's one of the backbones of SL. I make money here same as many. Yet some cvommercial ventures did presentations that highlighted their product without looking like Yet Another Store. Look at Happy Mood's SL5B presentation, or Flying Tribe. Robin Sojourner's Featured two of her products, but did not give the impression of "oh, a store!" Plenty of other examples of highlighting product without Being A Store.

Others, not so much: the shoe store, the car store, the tattoo store, the period clothing store... yes, even the kid store. Those are the "commercial" I'm talking about.

And really, it wasn't a trade show, it was supposed to highlight culture. I don't believe "the consumer culture" was one of the communities listed. ;-)

The one that really got me? M____ B____, "Attorney at Law." Glowing white build that had nothing but corporate style pics on the wall, that didn't even give out notecards.

How is that a community?

I missed that one. I'm glad.

You're being too hard on yourself with that one... You were one of the ones I was referring to when I mentioned people working to make a difference in the event. (=_=)

*points at Mari* I know this girl likes to complain about her own "big mouth", but in my mind, she is one of the finest resident advocates the SL community has to offer. Her tolerance of the frustration of it all and willingness to work to git-r-done is totally commendable. I hope we can all do our own part to make a difference by following her example. (^_^)y

you are all forgetting that members of SL are the ones who set up their own display. some things were done right. some not. blame your neighbor for the 'ick', not LL.

Yes, and no. Yes, it is the ultimate responsibility of the presenters themselves -- yet it would also be the resident coordinators and Linden Lab handlers who would have an editorial responsibility when it coems to both picking presentations, and making sure those presentations fit a certain theme an stuff.

If they can go around and worry about the stuff they did worry about, then they can pay attention to dat, too.

It was the one communities that wasn't "respectfully declined." :p

I thought about trying to get an entry, but when saw how chaotic it had gotten, I was turned off and tuned out. Just as well, since my RL seems to have eaten my time so I can't get much done in SL.

Maybe RL won't be so bad next year and I can find a fringe festival for my idea.
