I like Grendel's Children. I think that's the name of it.

That does depend entirely on what you kind of avatar you mean. Human, tiny, furry, dragon, demonic, cyber, neko... there's a huge variety out there, and a great designer in one field might be hopeless with, or not even be interested in, another.

That said, Grendel's does have as large a variety of avs as anywhere I've seen on the grid. Not necessarily the best (although have some excellent ones), but fantastic value. if you're looking for human avs, then it's more a case of picking a good skin/shape/hair combination, and working on it from there.

Welcome to the forums, Sorcha!

Yes, what Kelli said... what do you want to look like? Human, furry, elf or robot? It's many, many more different styles and looks. If you want a human look, I have to ask if you are male or female, because I can't tell just from your name :)

Me! :o LOL

Seriously it's a matter of taste just like anything else. Your idea of best may not be the same as the next persons. So.....you really just have to shop around and try demos and find what appeals to YOU. ;)

I don't know if there's any one creator who is "the best" at creating an avatar. In particular for humans, it's much more a matter of piecing together all the elements.
Skin, shape and hair are major factors for your "base look", but different people have widely different tastes, and various vendors specialize in specific parts.
For skin, I am partial to Insolence's slightly stylized look, for example, which I personally find match the SL world really well, but others want, say, a more photorealistic skin. And I make my own shapes, tweaking them to my liking from scratch.

If you want inspiration for a shopping spree, these are some of my favorites: http://talirosca.wikidot.com/shopping

I don't think there's any such thing...most of the human avs you see will be mix and match from various creators, based entirely on the individual Resident's taste.

Personally, I like Curio and Celestial Studios skins best, as well as ETD, Truth, and Deviant Kitties hair. Miriel makes gorgeous eyes, but will be closing soon, so you should probably hurry if you want to check them out.

Clothing is a whole separate post. ;)

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Even within basic human avatars, there's a wide variety, and few designers can ever get it all perfect. I have a preference for Asian shapes and skins, and have found that the best designers for such are those who specialize specifically in Asian appearance.

Me! XD

Heh... No... But, I do make all my own avatars. If you're willing, working on your own avatar shape is quite rewarding. Then go ahead and do some skin & clothing shopping and make refinements as time passes. (^_^)y

I like Lumiere for skins, very nice work

Lumiere Kids Skins (Main Store) , Plush Giga (189, 44, 22)

And for shapes, I like Livie's.

For hair, Goldie Locks is wonderful, my first and only stop.

I have many different looks. If you say a bit of what you want to look like it's maybe easier.
Casual, relaxed, sweet?

Stylish?

A bit sexy?

Yes.

There are a lot of shape makers. For skins I like Redgrave, Belleza and Bebae the best so far.

I know of some freebie ones you can get at good shops if you are on a budget.
