It's easy to seize the currency. All you need is one of those fancy little pocket sized storage thingies, right? Plug it into the USB Port on the LL mainframe and download all the Lindens onto it. Presto. We're all broke.

They can hire the Ginko people as consultants.

The 'second life' of many US dollars is as Euros. That's where the smart money has gone. The SL economy is unpredictable, as evidenced by last year's land price crash (although the L$ held steady through that crisis).

I like the idea of the FBI "seizing all L$". I wonder how many sacks you would need to carry all the L$ in Second life.

And to "GOP strategist, Emma Faye Kerr" we should probably add, don't worry dear. I understand that most ladies feel the need to indulge in that occasionally :)

I was expecting to find the FBI were holding my ex-partner's avatar (her name withheld out of confidentiality) in some dusty SL interrogation cell, using scripts on her to spill the beans on why she resorted to hiring her lovely body out, and like Mata Hari, spying on, and gathering intimate information about several SL VIP's. We later find out some of those VIP's were really FBI agents (Mr. Smith from the Matrix, and a few of his buddies. It became apparent she spread the news far and wide, exposing their identities and showing explicit videos of their secret fantasies acted out with her (some really disgusting things I can’t mention here). They quickly became indignant and seeking revenge, causing her to disappear. (Or is it because I have her on ignore???) Now, if you believe THAT story, then I have a virtual bridge to sell to you...

The article is a parody of a recent real life FBI raid on the maker of an alternative currency:

Be interesting how this case turns out.

It's just a matter of time with the Linden-----Not just in the US but all the countries

if you're a Scadian, or spend lots of time in Renn faires, or SF/fantasy/gaming/comics conventions you've probably seen liberty dollars for years....

they are innocuous enough, but the fact that the IRS Evasion groups latched onto it as a way to further evade taxation, is basically what has brought all this mess to a head. I won't go into who's arguments are valid, etc, just say that all sides have some points...

LL has little worry of the linden succumbing to a similar fate, since they can obtain protection by moving their banking elswhere, where reporting standards don't crush a company with requirements (theoretically) for what, in the vast sense, amounts to pocket change transactions...

if they'd been smart? the caymans would be one oft cited (and overpriced) option.... but they certainly aren't the only option. UK banking solved some of their problems.... just not as many as would have been nice (or possible), and created a few new ones...

Were they to do this, then the governments could just go after the residents for using it, or stop pay pal, banks or other services from accepting currency exchange payout transactions.

depends on what it'd cost the government to do that... and who they'd piss off in the process... for example, US gov doesn't want to piss off UK gov, so they aren't going to push to hard about being able to look through UK bank transactions... likewise they can't stop other global companies from dealing in US money, or even from converting to or from it. nevermind that LL DOES presumably pay taxes to IRS like they should, and does not claim to back their currency as such, but in fact treats it as an entertainment service, which they can reasonably be expected to sell. so the irs just focuses on the money that's easy to get.

(now they could have avoided the whole mess by staying out of exchange business, but presumably they make enough money from the process and the added ability to have finer control of the economy through market sinks, reselling sink currency, and the residuals they make on transactions, to make it all worthwhile... it could even be a step towards going global as a company, and providing an actual backed currency through the platform... but that's tin foil cap territory)
