This came up in my head last night. I was spending time with a friend but, at the same time I was organizing my inventory and dealing with a load of IMs. She and I were the only two in chat range and I was getting worried that I was being a bore. When my worry overwhelmed me, I decided to ask. Her response was along the lines of ‘not really. I’m watching TV and in IMs.’ That was a relief to me. (^_^)

But, at the same time, it made me wonder. When I’m inworld, I don’t really have anything else going on. The majority of my time is spent in open chat, running and jumping my avatar around, and rarely distracted by things beyond SL. I don’t have a TV in my room. I usually have music going, but rarely focus on it. When I’m in SL with more than a few minutes of idle time, I usually get a bit jittery and start looking for more things to do. (I’m sure a few of my friends can attest to this. I do come across as rather hyper, no?) =^-^=

So, now, the question... How ‘involved’ are you when you’re logged in to SL? Or, moreso, what are you usually actively doing while you’re inworld? Are you reading books? Browsing web sites? Watching TV? Knitting? Reverse engineering a flux capacitor? (o.o)

Or, if you’re active inworld but not in local or open activities, what are you doing? Inventory sorting? Building? IMs? Group IMs? Customer support? Erm.... Camping? (o.o)

Just tossing it out there. A curiosity of mine at the moment. =^-^=

Varies, but I do have a lot of idle time in SL, as I tend to log on automatically, and run SL in the background while working in PSP, watching videos on Youtube, going through forums.. I keep browsers and other applications at a reduced size so they don't cover local chat in SL so I can keep an eye out for anyone talking to me, join the convo if anything interesting pops up, or a newbie asks for help.

I just bought a new chopper and I love it. So I have been riding that thing around mainland and Zindra. I know there has been endless discusson about ban lines, but I found sim crossing on that thing to be a challenge. Even when I go real slow I am still projected in lalala land. LOL.

Will and I attend a lot of concerts, participate in 7 seas and attend art exhibits and visits museums. I also have taken a few classes at NCI. If I can muster up enough patience, I may even try to "build" something. Mickey has even inspired to take Minerva (my horse) out more. I even attend things that I would not be interested in rl, like the opera. Will likes opera, so I go with him and just turn the sound off and tell him how fabulous the performer is. :D

when i'm online i'm usually active with something... unless i'm waiting for my wife to get dressed so that we can go somewhere or something alo9ng those lines.
in that case i'm usually poking the forum and/or showcase to find the place we're going to visit, and since my and her computer are in the same room in RL it doesnt really matter. ;)

yeah, I'm 99% immersed in SL, I can't even have the tv on in the background, if i want to watch tv, I log out of SL and do it.

Avatar logs in and automatically becomes a statue, while the real self is away on other window(s) or away from desk. Occasionally (window-)shops for new clothes or stuffs like that when I am in the mood - the only time that requires my full attention.

TV is usually on and ignored - sometimes family is in same room and try to talk to me- other times forum is my focus and sl is back ground - at times i am bldg and carrying on multiple im's - i dont generally do just one thing even in rl.

If I'm with someone, especially one on one, they get my full attention. Yes, I will answer IM's, and so can end up with a couple of conversations going on at the same time, but I prefer, and expect where appropriate, undivided attention. If I'm on the periphery of a group, it depends on whether the conversation is interesting. Otherwise I might surf a bit as well.

I've actually cut down a great deal on my multitasking..I used to have so much on my plate but now it's like i am always looking for something to do..If i do finally find something to do i end up wanting to keep things more under control so i tell half my IM's i am doing something and can't talk right now..
I actually like not having too much to do at one time anymore.

plus i don't commit to events anymorelike i used to.. Like weddings and things like that..They tend to sneak up on me and i end up getting an IM..

Bride:  Are you coming??It's about to start in a couple of minutes!

Me:  Um ya!! I was just changing..I thought it was an hour from now..This damn SLT still messes me up!!

So i tend to keep my multitasking to a minimum these days..

Nowadays most I do in SL is build stuff... a fairly solitary activity... or else do my music performances, again a fairly solitary activity. That and prepping the stuff I've built for sale... again a solitary activity. Am I active? I guess so. Am I socially active? Not really. Done the social thing. It was interesting for a while. Might try it again sometime.

For me, it varies, and depends a lot on time of day.

For example, during the day, I have the luxury that if my RL work is at a slow period, I can goof off on-line, as long as I remain at my workstation and am avaliable if called on. (Payback for being on-call 24x7 if there is an emergency or if tasks need to get done in off-hours). As long as my work assignments get done promptly, no one cares what I do while I am on standby.

So I might pop in-world to RP with a friend who is only available during the day. That friend would tend to have my full in-world attention, but I'll be keeping an eye out for incoming e-mails from work or IM's from work, indicating I need to do something. Or I may end up answering a question for work over their IM system between replies to my friend in-world.

If I am not specificly meeting a friend to do RP, then I might be doing some work in RL, sorting inventory, building, scripting and/or chatting via IM, all at the same time.

In the evenings, if I am interacting directly with someone I try to give them my full attention. But if they are only replying every few minutes because of their own distractions, then I might work on a script or IM someone else.

When I am in SL, I am 100% active in SL. I will most likely be chatting in open and 3 or 4 IM's at the same time, and prolly working on inventory also, but all my attention is focused inside SL.

If there is no one to talk to, no one to pester, and my inventory is caught up, and teleports aren't working so I can explore, I will exit SL and find something else to do. I have to be busy with something all the time. :)

I don't login much unless Hera is online. Then except for rl distractions, I concentrate only on her. I will generally shut down group chat and such because they become too much of a distraction.

If I am building something, then I am open to chatting and reading the forums or what ever else comes up.

My TV is always on, whether watching it or not. I sometimes do housework when online, just glancing at the screen when I walk by to see if there are any IMs directed at me. It's sort of embarassing to answer questions 5 minutes after they were asked, but hey, my house is clean.

But about 80 percent of my time online is used building stuff. And most of my social interaction is through group chat (about building stuff.) When I actually do get out of my workshop to do stuff, I try to only do that, but I can't always concentrate on it. Don't tell my friends, but I have been known to go to parties just so I have time to watch a little TV without having to concentrate on making something. shhhhh

My immersion ratio goes way down in Summer. As someone else said, I'm up and down a lot during the day. Let's just say that I am looking forward to the start of school... and less housework.

When I'm in SL, I'm 'all in', all the time.

*insert bad poker joke I couldn't think of here* ^_^

I have lately been logging on and doing nothing inworld which is not like me. I've alsways been a "Don't log in just to log in" type. I generally run full screen, and don't multi task when inworld. If I'm going to read a book, watch TV, do my laundry, or anything that requires long afk periods I don't stay logged on. I have been straying from that recently, last night I spent all night working on my blog while my avatar stood in the house looking clueless.

Next time that happens, let me know. I can at least leave your avatar lying in the house looking kidnapped.

if I'm on I'm pretty active, usually scripting/building, I generally don't do things like watch tv (too distracting) but 5 or 6 IM's + shopping for ideas + hanging out with friends is not unusual

When I'm in SL--no TV, no radio, no phone. If I'm doing something automatic (such as dancing), I may read the forums or edit documents in another program.

Most of the time, I'm exclusively in SL. Sometimes, though, I have browsed XStreet while online, but I don't think that really counts as distraction. ;)

Because of my RL, though, I'm usually only able to log in after 9 or 10pm SLT, and then only have a couple hours after that before I'm off to bed, so I like to make the most of it. :)

If I am with my partner I am only focused on him, if someone IMs me i tell tell them i am busy and will get back to them. If i am hanging out then i tend to be multi tasking with RL paper work
