Just thought I'd share that. :)

I still don't know why I'm here, after all this time... I'm hoping someone else figures it out so they can let me know.

Oooooh can I come and watch? I promise to be nice.

You're welcome to attend! Fair warning: If you do, you can pretty much count on being asked to demonstrate texting-on-a-poseball with the instructor. Ahem. And woohoo. And other unprintable-but-generally-favorable comments.

My Advice

First, have an intimate session with the sliders and get your avatar customized. Ditch the original clothes by retexturing them with whatever is in your library. They won't be great, but it's a start.

Then, go buy $10 worth of L's and stick them in your back pocket. What you use them for primarily is uploading textures so you can make your own clothes. Cltohing is one of the few things that newbies can rezz. Homemade clothes are unequivocally the the best. They may not be the most detailed and the first attempts may have a few flaws, but you get a custom experience and often you create stuff that is just plain unavailable in stores.

Here is a shirt tutorial. I couldn't find the one I used....

http://www.secondlife-shirts.com/secondlife_tutorials.htm

I had two amazingly good blouses right off the get-go. Texture clothing and even texture hair are surprisingly versatile and a good start out spot for projects.

If you are lucky, someone may give you a box of sculptie prims. I got several boxes and if you want to meet in world, just come by and I'll put them in your inventory.

Your next stop as a builder is prim hair. I'm not caucasian in Second Life so I do a lot of ethnic hair. I also figured out how to make costumes and a one piece bathing suit. I still have a tough time with texture shoes.

Houses, furniture, and plants and lawn ornaments all have to wait until you have land or they should. Renting is a rip off (Sorry to those trying to rent out apartments). A premimum membership paid out in one lump sum averages out to $6.00/month. A starter plot 512m is between $8.00-$10.00 That means my costs are $6.75/month $1.66 per week or 40L per week. There is no tier at 512m and yes this is mainland land. You can't rent for that. There are free prefabs or you can work on building your own house, if you decide you want or need a house rather than rezzing/exhibition space.

The other important thing to do besides learning to manipulate your environment is learn the geography. I did not come through the standard orientation places due to the fact that I signed on with a friend. I cut my teeth over on the NMC islands and other academic islands and journeyed to the mainland to see how "real SL" worked. I could walk all over the NMC islands. Research Park is also good for exploring as is Texas Women's University.

Eventually you end up bushwacking in snow country or Gaeta. One of the biggest disappointments for me and maybe for you if you have a history of MU*ing on well run social worlds is that Second Life is not completely walkable. You can walk to the end of the world in any number of directiosn and see it on a map. Then there are ban lines, security orbs, and pissy property owners. There are no roads in a lot of SL. I won't say what I do to nasty property owners, but you have a zero L weapon in your arsenal.

It's good to know Second Life's limitations: No A-line dresses because we don't have a basic robe/dress mesh and one piece bathing suits are difficult. If your avie is far from the standards sizes, prim clothes won't work and your building proportions will be too small.

Get a good feel for space, geography, and a bit of building/clothes-making knowledge and then take it from there.

You get him all fixed up, Sassy.

But before you turn him loose at Neva Naughty's Free Sex Room, send him to my Sex and Relationships class (GQ Start, Fridays, 6 pm SL). The last thing the Grid needs is another "U give sexxies now?" avatar.

Is that like my class? Mine has a lot of hands on...

Ok first, where is your class Sassy? ;-)

Ford: Just recently I finally managed to join in the SL world (you wouldn't believe the 3 days of installation trouble I had!). It can be quite confusing at first, especially if you have no one to show you around. A good friend of mine introduced me to SL last week, and since Sunday [my first successful log-in] I've only seen him twice for about 5 minutes each LOL. The next time your in-world, add me to your friends and I'll give you a very helpful folder full of landmarks (places like stores and sight seeing areas) that I found/was given in my first day or so. They're very helpful for getting rid of that nasty generic skin/clothing and making you look better all around.

I've kept some other freebie items (stuff that people made, then either never managed to sell and put up for 0L or just made for the purpose of helping us newbies) that you're more than welcome to have since I know first hand how fustrating it can be browsing through 1000's of 0L boxes, many of which are duplicates in different locations.

Most importantly that I've only learned in the last 24 hours.. if you're lost or just wondering about something, don't be shy...ASK! I cannot speak for the mentor system in SL as I have yet to get around to finding one, but I've bumped into plenty of nice and friendly people (which are abundant in SL) that were willing to share landmarks, hair/clothes, or just information with me, all I had to do was break down my shy barrier and initiate the conversation ^_^

Hope to see you in-world, Ford. Don't forget to IM me and I'll help how I can!

They tend to be kind of ad-hoc, depends ;)

Mentor is just a tag, plenty help without wearing a mentor tag so do ask away.

one thing that confuses me still... if SL is supposed to be your world, your imagination, I truly believe if someone wants SL to be a game they should be allowed to do so and not being corrected that it isnt a game. To those insisting it isnt a game, thats your world, your imagination.

AH! But thats the beauty of Second Life! Its a game. Its not a game.

Make of it what you will. :)

Yup, and Sassy was kind enough to show this noob with the ill fitting $0L prim hair and wretched flying skills around yesterday. She gave me a ton of great advice and even showed me some of her toys... :-)

Read all about it -

"Infamous napper Sassy strikes again!!"

That'll be the latest headlines ;-) Sassy is right, you don't *have* to have mentor tags over your head to help others. Mentors are just those who dedicate their time to publicly helping people on Orientation Island or what-not. There are plenty of unofficial mentors out there, like the sassiest and sexiest newbnapper of them all, Sassy

Thank you very much Sassy for giving me such great help, but remember gents, it comes at a price!!! That old saying "Nothing in life is free" is oh oh oh so true!

After being newbnapped from my local morning pub Le Papillion Caberet and Bordell (nice pub eh? hehe) I was whisked away to Sassy's little island in the sky and after getting a nice little tour, Sassy was kind enough to show me how the dance balls worked (very informative for newbies since we have no clue WTF those are at first lol)

Link 1 - http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p169/worldcruiser81/Snapshot_001.png

Always be careful how much information you want though!! Dance balls apparently was a freebie, but to get more information, I guess a price comes with it!!

Link 2 - http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p169/worldcruiser81/Snapshot_005.png

Of course, when I kept up with my questions, Sassy was MORE than happy to help (she really was a wealth of information so don't be scared off!!!) But I was informed that I was now HERS and had to be a "good boy" for more answers

[Link 3 Note: yes, that is Doomsday standing with her back to us, she got a jolly good laugh out of it!!]

Well all in all I had a GREAT time and as soon as the whip started landing was thanking Sassy profusely!! The only question I have now is...what other questions could I go back to ask her?!?! *grin*

Shhhh, Ravenmyst just let herself into my vicinity for a little box "Unwearing" help...

(Sassy quickly hides the Catch-O-Matic and smiles sweetly.."How may I help you Ravenmyst?";)
