Unless they give themselves away nope no way to tell.

I know people that stream media can see IP addys but even that doesn't guarantee its the same person behind the av. Could be another family member behind a router/firewall.

Loads of stuff..it's how scripts normally identify avatars (it's a unique identiifer) rather than using your name. Usually they can detect it themselves, but sometimes you need it for split payment things (so the scripts can give a share of the money to the person whose uuid it is), or to have scripts send them messages if they're not on the same sim, or for online indicators.

Your key (UUID) isn't confidential information in any way. Most unofficial viewers show it somewhere in the avatar's profile anyway, and you reveal it to scripts every time you say anything, touch anything or tread on anything.

Not any definitive way, but compare speech patterns, humour and so on. See if the profiles are similar.

A couple of years ago I unmasked the alt my friend's partner was using to cheat on her. He had rezzed some objects on his land in the alt's name. Once I compared the two profiles it was obvious it was one and the same person

If you know the person well, speech patterns are a prime clue. Unless a person really works at changing how they talk/type, they will leave a "fingerprint". Look for the alt to use the same words, expressions, typos as the person you know.

I use chicken bones & rooster blood and have never failed to identify an alt with this method.

It used to be common advice back the *ahem* old days of this forum that you might as well assume everyone you meet in SL is an alt, sometimes it may be someone you even know. You really can't take anything at face value in an anonymous digital world. It's all just bits floating around in the tubes.
