To get a handle on the question you should first go here... https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Torley_Linden and watch the video entitled "I make tutorials and videos like this:" For those who haven't seen it before..this is Torley ' unleashed' ....cue the music.... I think that is such a great movie..but what about those shadows..how'd he do that..? (that was the question by the way.. ) I thought they might be a feature of the new Release Candidate but I've been playing with that and so far no sign of shadows. OK I realise Torley's probably got access to certain developmental stuff we can only dream about..but I thought I'd ask just in case something's gone right by me (as per usual) and I hadn't even noticed...in which case could someone bring me up to speed please.. Perre.. P.S. ..great movie huh!!

I watched about halfway through that before I shut it off (did not have sound on thank god)
I like his tutorials, but that video was hard on the head (too much jumping around for me)
as for the shadows, no clue, curious to see the answer to this as well

My guess on the shadow on the first part of the clip would be 2 prims, one on the ground and one up above, bottom one with a shadow texture, positioned the same as the top one and on same rotation .. but thats me, I have absolutely no clue otherwise .. but I am logging in world to test my theory
after looking at it again I know I am wrong but hey ...

Hmm..not so sure Nissa, the whole scene is too fluid (whatever I mean by that..sounds good though), the shadows are definitely generated by a light source onto the moving objects You can probably tell I haven't a clue what I'm on about..but it looks great..the shadows that is.. Perre..

Actually it's occurred to me that it just might be that the whole idea of posting that movie (and a heap more others along side it..click the button on the bottom right of the viewer) was to generate chat..'how'd they do that'..(darn I've been used) In other words..a hint of SL to come.. Perre..

I think Vittorio Beerbaum has an early development shadow add on - haven't tried it but I think it is supposed to do all that

in the Comments to the Video, Torley replies: "Y0 and thanx for watching! Shadows are currently in-testing and some Resident-compiled viewers have 'em. Seek 'em out." So, they are to come Awesome video btw.

Nice to know it's coming our way (in the not too distant future I suspect) Perre.. Partington..where did you find the comments to the video out of interest..this 'seek em out' has me intrigued. Ignore that Partington..I've found it..

I am not completely up to date on shadow draft, but... LL has that render pipe running and there are a few 3rd party viewers that will use it. A quick google brought up: http://kirstenleecinquetti.blogspot.com/2008/07/shadow-draft-2-update.htmlOr you can get the source : http://svn.secondlife.com/trac/linden/browser/branches/shadow-draftedit: i do remember that you need a 8800 or better nvidia and be able to have hardware skinning checked.

Hi there, sorry for no replying (and sorry for the lack of infos for those that have requested it to me IW) but working + vacation + working, it's getting busy here. My "ex" patch was a modded version of a previous SL client, applied on it only the modified files coming out from a "shadow draft" (not even beta, it's an early version) client (compiled by me), so you were able to unpack my archive into a regular SL client to have the shadows. Unfortunately this won't work anymore with the current client, since there's a new trunk file. Unless someone did it already, i have to compile the new client and then build the pacth (with the modified files) to work with the current SL client. What's the problem? ...my time! :/ ...i won't promise, but i try to look into it (im missing the shadows in my pictures and vides here too ).

i am using a shadow client from: http://kirstenleecinquetti.blogspot.com/2008/07/shadow-draft-2-update.htmldirect link: http://www.armyof4.com/Kirstenlee/Kirstens%20SD2-R5.exeit works pretty good, and it appears to work on my testing machine (wich has an ATI Radion in it) When enabled i will also say that lighting in general looks better, and u can have an infinite amount of lights showing all at once i bet u can guess what the next "First Look" viewer will feature, lol well that & per-pixel lighting. im sure they will stuff some other goodies into it aswell

That's what I'm using, too. The unlimited light sources with the shadow draft is a huge, huge bonus.

It's just awesome!. I've tested the one posted above and they've made lots of improvements since the last time I tried it. The shadows are better and have smoother/softer edges. But also the bump mapping has been improved further. Enable shiny on a bump mapped object for best results!. I've also noticed that local lights cast a specular highlight on shiny objects. All this means that we're no longer gonna have to bake shadows and lighting in external programs. It also means and a reduction in gray textures because builders wont have to apply several 1024x1024 baked textures to their builds. Hell, using the standard bumpmaps, we might not even need textures anymore!

I was thinking about this the other day and having a giggle over the conflict that will occur between items with prim shadows and the shadow feature of the viewer. I've been holding off building anything incorporating shadows for that cool effect, hoping that shadows will come to SL via the viewer, so I'm pretty excited to see this become reality soon. I've seen the pictures, and they're incredible. And I can't wait to get some prims back as we remove prim shadows from objects!

Still can't use it. Only seems to support a couple graphics cards, an mine ain't one of them. Also, it's for PCs only.

No textures were used in this: Just SL's bump maps.
