From: Alisha Matova I do not "play" the lindenx. I just use it to cash out when needed. I am curious though.
It looks like one can buy as high as 290ish and potentially turn around and list to sell in the 250s(maybe).
I understand the volume would have to be high to make reasonable money, but are there people actively trading like this? How much of the exchanges volume is traders like this verses businesses cashing out to pay tier or to bank profits? You can try to buy at 290 but nobody will sell at that rate. there are 3 variables to watch for both buying and selling, first is the best rate being offered by others, the amount being offerd and the turnover rate, if the daily turnover rate is bigger then the amount of the best offer you look at the next, is the turnover rate still higher then move to the next, once the amount of the offers is bigger the the turnover rate you have found the optimum rate at wich to put in your offer, offcourse with lindex being screwed as it is now this doens't realy work and you have to make a best guess depending on gaps in the offers etc.

Ah I see now. The 290 figure I see is an open buy order. Well that all makes much more sence. I now see the spread(if that's the right word) is much smaller.
Thank you.

From: Status Blog [FINISHED] LindeX Maintenance [FINISHED 08:05 am PST] The maintenance has concluded, the LindeX is open again.
We are temporarily halting Linden Dollar (L$) purchases for maintenance and review purposes. Please monitor this post for updates and further information. From http://status.secondlifegrid.net/2008/12/27/post399/ .

Well, for whatever it's worth, I've missed the feeding frenzy but I'm sort of glad. I hope nobody buying $L was put into a position of disadvantage either. This really has the feel of one person watching the LindeX and doing strategic sells. What next, do sellers wait for New Year's Eve? Valentine's Day during dinnertime? Meh. I've floated my parcel meters with the LindeX rates before, years ago, but I'm not well set up for it - it takes about 20 minutes per region to do it, every time the rate changes substantially. I've got 48 regions. I really hope they shake down this LindeX thing fast for everyone's sake.

Now that's an attitude that I really do like. I wasn't going to sell any L$ for that very reason but, during this discussion, I decided that I wanted to test what we were discussing. Even then it took me two goes at it before I clicked the final button. I don't like to think that people were being significantly short-changed because of a bug in the system, but they were.

From: Argent Stonecutter What makes you think this is a matter of them "posting fake orders" instead of it being a bug in the software? Is there any other evidence of them posting fake orders? That the amount stuck at 262 changed today between when it was shut down for "maintenance" and went back online makes me think its deliberate. That the stuck price of 262 is the same as the price that Supply Linden dumps real sell orders at also is a clue ----------------------- Meanwhile, my sell @ 252 is partly filled, Im not sure when that happened, but I will be watching it again tonight to see what happens

If something was screwed up in the software, say part of it was "losing" postings, then the price that had the most postings would be the one where you'd see the most effect. If there was a few thousand stuck at 258, you'd never notice it. And 262 was the peak before the glitch hit, so that's where you'd see it. The same figures could equally well be caused by deliberate misinformation and by a database glitch that lost track of postings.
Which is why I was asking if there was information *other than* this glitch to imply that there was false data in the LindeX. I hadn't heard of anything like that before.

If Supply Linden doesn't stay awake all night we're going to have a financial crisis, WTF is going on?

I think "crisis" is too strong. If it's not a glitch in the software that left a bunch of trades stuck in the pipe, then all that means is that demand for the Linden is extremely high, and the Second Life economy is stronger than some people have been trying to suggest.

A few days back, about 19th or so, i recall seeing a LL test message in the exchange. Quite possible they've been monitoring an ongoing glitch.

From: Elanthius Flagstaff As has been said said all the buys at 262 were being skipped and instead sells were matching against 261. There's nowhere near enough orders at 261 to support any kind of trading so the whole market was quickly blown away down to 200 or something crazy. Check here: http://ninjaland.net/tools/lindex-market-data/ you can clearly see the 14 million at 262 remain untouched while 261 went from 33 million down to 0. Once 261 was exhausted there was no support at all. It looks almost like this started on the 21st even. It's a pretty fragile point for the LindeX right now. If normal trade eats away the 30 million at 262 right now we'll see another crazy panicky swing. Elanthius I love your website. As I analyze your data it appears that there was a Supply Linden sell order hung for L$14,230,523 at L$262/1 sometime between Mon 2008-12-22 04:00 when the total at L$262/1 was L$12,193,677 and Tue 2008-12-23 23:00 when we first see L$14,230,523. The L$14,230,523 at L$262/2 is seen multiple times after that. Also if you look at the historical data you see that the minimum rate of trade was L$261/1 on both the 23rd and 24th while the minumum rate of trade on the 25th was L$260/1. Had everybody who was selling known that this glitch was there the damage could have been even greater. Many people continued to post sell orders at L$262/1 and L$263/1. I was watching in awe as the rate kept dropping until some people with spare L$ started competing for the very low rates. What your data didn't see was Supply Linden come in with about L$5,000,000 new L$ after Sat 2008-12-0700 to put on top of the existing L$14,230,523. It was shortly after that the LindeX was closed. This was clearly a failure of Supply Linden not watching the Lindex and big content creators taking a long holiday break not selling L$. It should be noted that Supply Linden only sold L$10,000,000 new L$ for a two month period, I think September and October, and that didn't upset the balance of the market. The lack of selling by the big money interests in SL was the biggest factor here but Supply Linden could have kept the exchange rate stable with an influx of new L$ which is exactly his function. I expect to see a huge influx of selling by all the absent big money interests starting on Sunday and going through January 2nd.

I have an order at 256 that's not being filled. It's a real order, there's definitely a bug.

Werm, well, I was wondering too what happend. I wanted to refill my lindens buget becuse I only have 800 Lindens left but now I see that I have to pay over 60 dollars for 16.000 Lindens and I rember that I got 25.000 Lindens for at least 30 Dollars the last time I made that. So, will this exchange rate stay like it is now or will it go down again? I only cant afford so much real life money for SL and dont want to pay this much for virtual cash.....
Heh and I wanted to get me those Breach Weapons......

I too missed the feeding frenzy and Supply Linden clearly goofed. I feel vindicated that 261 was the target price, but I feel bad that they screwed up and some people paid a lot of money for a few L. It at least appears to be stable now.

Heh and I wanted to get me those Breach Weapons...... I think your memory about getting 25,000L for around US$30 isn't right. The LindeX looks to be back to normal now.
