From the 1.23.0 RC release notes:

From: someone
* Added: Add per-pixel lighting and real-time shadows to the viewer (Experimental)

This feature is a prototype of a new renderer in the viewer graphics engine. It is turned off by default. The new renderer supports only high-end graphics cards and requires a GeForce 8 or Radeon HD2600 or later, but will not work on Mac OSs. This version is a debugging prototype only and is not yet supported by Linden Lab.

This is the same shadow code that has appeared in Kirsten's Shadowdraft and Boy Lane's experimental Cool Viewer, but now you can find it in an official LL viewer. Expect visual anomalies and a drop in frame rate if you enable shadows; still, they're definitely fun if you've got the hardware to make them work.

Will they not work on nVidia GeForce 7 series cards at all, or just work slowly?

/me sighs

I was really planning on waiting a good bit longer to update my graphics cards.

This sounds cool, but what interests me more than the shadows is the per-pixel lighting.

Maybe on the 7800 and 7900. Don't worry, it'll be a good bit longer before shadows are ready for prime time.

Apparently they deliberately did not tell any one how, "to show just how experimental it is."

It's a secret, so don't tell anybody. This is just between you and me (Everybody else turn away):

In the debug settings you set RenderUseFBO to TRUE

and then set RenderDeferred to TRUE

Debug settings, change the following to "true":

RenderUseFBO
Renderdeferred

Enjoy numerous graphics glitches, non-functional snapshots and spectacular crashes.

You aren't missing anything except glitchy graphics, non-functional snapshots and spectacular crashes.

Oooh...SECRETS. Okies, I'll keep it under my hat and not let ANYONE know.

I'll be back to let you, and you alone, know if it works on a 8800 GT.

ACK...Yah, it works; but, my framerates dropped to an abysmal low.

Guess it's time to upgrade.

Looks pretty good to me, except for alpha textures disappearing at times. Crashed only once so far

This so called Release Candidate is the worst ever that was put out by LL. Nothing, absolutely nothing is even working in parts. Not the http-textures, not shadows and certainly not the adult features. Oh, and the nice alpha issues.... <add more>

This is early alpha, not beta and not at all an RC. It crashes. I ask LL to withdraw that piece of garbage and work on the code before putting this out as a public release candidate!

I know you guys work on a tough timeline to push out 1.23 by 30th of June. But it simply is not ready for this. I call that irresponsible!

It looks nice on the radeon HD3650 but the fps is awful. Also as others mentioned the alpha textures vanish and clip.
