From: Dilbert Dilweg I would advise against AVG / It will disconnect you a lot if on a network.. I have had to trouble shoot many people and their connectivity problems. each case they were using AVG. I used it for 1 day and was disconnected from SL all day long..
thumbs down for AVG on SL. Unless you like re-logging every 30 minutes Yea AVG bites. I installed it on my laptop last year and from that day forward i couldn't print over the network with it until Argent mentioned some AVG issues and i uninstalled it. But, when i did have AVG i had no SL problems and did not have to relog every 30mins or anything. I just do not like having a program on my computer that shuts down my normal everyday functionality without so much as a warning notice.

From: Colette Meiji you didn't watch CSI:NY! I never saw the second episode of that (if it's what I'm thinking of) and I sometimes wonder what happened to that slinky, murderous ava?

On the other hand, if you aren't on a network, AVG has been great for me. I've had it for 5 years now, since I bought this computer and have never had even a positive pickup on any scan.

This doesn't say that AVG was proven to be the cause, just that it happened to be a common factor. I have been using AVG for quite a few years and have never ever had any disconnect problems. And there are quite a few people here on the forums that also use AVG, so I personally think that there is more going on that "just using AVG". I suppose there could be some configuration issue or maybe it does not like certain firewalls.

From: Briana Dawson What is a packet? Do we really know what a packet is?
IF a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, And the bus is interrupted as a very last resort, And the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report! IF your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, And the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash, And your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash, Then your situation's hopeless, and your system's gonna crash! IF the label on the cable on the table at your house, Says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, But your packets want to tunnel on another protocol, That's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall! IF your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, So your icons in the window are as wavey as a souse, Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'Cause as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang! IF the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy on the disk, And the microcode instructions cause unnecessary RISC, Then you have to flash your memory, and you'll want to RAM your ROM. Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your MOM! Hope that clears it up for you

From: Kanin Dover What you can do is exclude the cache folder from the AV realtime scanning. That is *the* sane thing to do. There's not a lot of point in having the grillions of megabyes flooding into cache being examined by an AV system. At the same time it would be unwise to reduce the level of protection that you might have from an up to date AV system. I certainly have traffic from other places while I am logged in to SL.

personally realtime scanning of the "whole computer" is a waste, just use the realtime internet activity scan, and then only turn the rest on for the first time you run a new program and open and save files with it. otherwise you're duplicating work and slowing your system unneccessarily (but the human condition is toward laziness, so wants to switch it on and off for the rest of the computer?)
