No, it will result in you seeing nothing of the avatar from outside the parcel but a cloud where the avatar is.

Avatars don't get the option of setting private, since an avatar is neither a prim nor a parcel.

ahh ok, just something else to confuse me with... grr.. actually it sounds maybe cool if there will be no sneaking around and such.

This is not a physical access control proposal, this is a proposal for creating privacy. It doesn't replace access controls.

So once someone sets foot on the parcel they can see everything, woudln't that mean people would still need a ban line? The homeowners and invited guest(s) would still see the random av zooming around the house, trying things out, or would they?

I guess I am confused who would be a cloud to whom, and when.

I wish there were a tab that would set land for 'group access only' by the way.

I'm not trying to solve the ban line problem here, I'm trying to provide privacy, not access control.

I understand that, Argent.

I'm not talking about access but about the illusion of privacy being shattered if unwanted visitors can still get onto the property and do their thing.

I'm also concerned that being a cloud on someone else's property would make it easier for people to hide. It is easier to see a full av than a wisp.

I know this is irrational, but the Adult Content thing stamped out all vestiges of my sanity:

I find myself dreading the blog post that requires us to set our parcels "private" to avoid ARs from the roving gangs of vigilante-voyeurs.

Yes.

I don't like how the onus is being placed upon the property owners/renters, instead of on people harassing and griefing people in their own homes.

I'm just trying to come up with tools that are actually useful. Expecting people not to play "peeping tom" isn't practical.

Voted

However, I don't see that LL will take this any more seriously than any other intelligent well thought out idea that actually gives the resident a predictable experience.
LL is just too busy getting ready for their IPO, sale or whatever it is they are getting ready for in the fall...

Maybe I missed it, but I can't figure out the "normal" prim option. As I read the proposal:

non-private parcel + any prim option = prim visible to all
private parcel + public prim = prim visible to all
private parcel + private prim = prim only visible to those on parcel

So,

private parcel + normal prim = ???

Also, access is a part of the privacy issue. While this doesn't replace ban line functionality, you do need keep people off your land while using these options for true privacy.

I think the following prim visibility options would be interesting:

on-land-only = only those on the land see the prim
off-land-only = only those NOT on the land see the prim
everyone = everyone see the prim

With these options, you could build a house that's on-land-only. Then, as a courtesy to your neighbors so they don't see an empty parcel, throw down a few trees as off-land-only.

You're right, "normal" and "public" should be equivalent.

I don't see the need for an off-land option. Making the outside of the house public should be fine.

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Oh I didn't mean that at you Argent - as I said I appreciate that you are trying to do something to solve it.

I voted for it, although it doesn't give one absolute privacy. It's a great start however.

I can see using this to hide my magic boxes, thus making my shop prettier!

Now, can you come up with something for the local chat and a way to allow us to remove the ban lines without resorting to a security orb? :)

That would be assuming someone wanted a house on their land. They might want to use their land as their own personal sandbox where they can build and not have anyone see what they're building. Or maybe that do want a house but don't even want that showing which might make the casual looky-loo think there's nothing there.

Admittedly, the off-land-only option probably wouldn't be used by many. But if they're already implementing code to filter out prims sent down the wire based on avatar position and prim/land settings, then it should be fairly trivial to add.
