============================

A dream of the future:

What would SL be like with a quantum computer?

Do you think one day you could just sit down at your desk after work and enter a literally virtual world where you could see feel and smell programmed sensations?

Do you think DJs could literally spin virtual tracks using special gloves designed to act like a mouse?

How about an avatar that moves based on the user's own movements?

How about a ... err, no, scratch that; that's dirty.

How about an artist, designing his or her art, from INSIDE Second Life; textures created entirely BY HAND by PROFESSIONALS who charge for their work based on RL Equivalency in SL currency?

How about companies like Sony selling copies of Acid Pro for those who own a Second Life computer like previously mentioned, allowing DJs to MIX THEIR OWN TRACKS inside SL, and record songs in REAL-TIME?!!?!??! ZOMG ROCKSTAR TUTORIAL PLZ

Anyway, what other things can you guys think of? What would a version of SL designed for Quantum Computers be like? Eventually we might know for certain! :)

Since we're talking quantum, I'd have to say yes and no.

There could be gray textures in an infinite number of parallel universes.

Groovy.

That would be Yes, No, Maybe and Maybe Not.

not really

Do you think DJs could literally spin virtual tracks using special gloves designed to act like a mouse?

you could do that with a 20+ year old power glove and 15+ year old computers

done and done

any software dealing with "non SL" world tasks would be inferior, if they were photoshop clone experts they would have knocked off photoshop and not delt with secondlife

see above, + in this day and age you can do such a thing and pipe it into SL in total real time, just in 2 different windows ... besides sony sucks with giving users what they want, starting with betamax

nothing that could be done on computers 15-20 years ago, just prettier and quicker, everyone is so hyped about the 1980's future of computers and wasting tons of time and resources making those dreams workable, even SL is a 1980's ficton, its time to move on ... noone thinks of the 2008 future of computers

do i dare count the buzzwords in that simple diagram

like turbocharged
or
nanotech
or
backbone
or
grid
?
and who uses sonar anymore? the powerglove used sonar, its inaccurate compared to lasers!
and lasers are in accurate to triangulated microwaves ect ect ect

it sounds like that buzzword bingo IBM commercial :)

SL on quantum computers...

Well, through a process known as "quantum tunneling" inventory items would simply vanish, to appear anywhere else in the universe.
So: same old, same old.

The future of Human Interface Design I suppose.

Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth. There is no spoon.

I am expecting to have one wall in my FL house be a huge screen with SL serving as my window to the net. I expect my virtual self and meat self to merge seamlessly and naturally as the brain accepts organizes all input that it filters as useful.

I expect my virtual self to be part of my identity in FL.

And I expect that those of us in SL now will be seen as pioneers but also stamped into oblivion by the eventual stampeded when everyone has a virtual presence one way or another.

I expect that certain forms of disabilities will make some persons virtual identities in many ways a better representation of who they really are than their meat ones.

I expect that we will value connection more than privacy.

I expect we will consume locally and travel will diminish as virtual travel and conferencing becomes the norm not only for corps but for everyone.

Countries that put a virtual wall up around their citizens will eventually wither in a drought of knowledge as the rest of the globe learns a new project based way of getting things done.

I think we will be more involved locally in our meat communities as we will stay put more.

I am waiting for the quantum computer and this brave new world...feels like home to me.

I will fight this with my last dying breath. I am a Human Being damnit!!

I do not wish to be "Plugged in" 24/7. I cherish the times when I can have solitude and privacy, just as much as I cherish Real Human to Human contact. I don't want Virtual Vacations, I want to feel , smell, touch, and see IN REALITY. Aplace like SL is where I want to go for a temporary escape from Real Life, I don't ever want it to be an integral part of it.

Technology is a wonderful tool, but I always want to control it. Not the other way around.

I do acknowledge however, the potentials of SL and whatever follows it for disabled and infirm people, for them I could be a Godsend. But me? Keep your brave new world, I'll stay in my cautious little one.

The quantum computers will have dispensed with us, and their own SL will be the only world there is because they will have cooled our old RL to a few degrees above absolute zero to make their quantum circuits work better.

How far will it go? Eventually, I see SL having photorealistic graphics including shadows and better transitions between animations. I think it will be possible too for RLs to make their avs more autonomous if they wish, with a level of programmed intelligence way beyound what bots are capable of now.

I think the workings of SL will be mainly just improvements of what we have now.
In the wider 3D industry, it's been possible for some time for avatars to replicate the movements of an RL connected to sensors - after all that's how many animations are done.

I don't think real-time motion transfer (or whatever it's techical name is) is likely to become a big thing in SL, though. Linden Lab - or its fore-runner began by working on motion-sensor suits, I believe, and their original 3D world idea was intended only to test the suits! But they got more interested in the 3D world than the suits and the rest is history!

I like pondering things like this.
It would come in handy for some of people due to disability or similar situations who are
extremely isolated with no family support, etc.
But if technology was available not sure it would be available to those shut ins,etc who need it the most.
I often have built system in my own head using advance nanobots who can reproduce almost anything on real world level, including turning my apartment into its own virtual holodeck and go to places I could never go.
Yet at same time having real life people is nice but there are people who don't have that for various reasons and closest thing they could have is a virtual world similar to that.
It is fun to think about things like this but not sure if Quantum system is way to go from what little I have read about them.
We need new entire technology.

Yep, this was my first thought. It'd crash just as often, only it'd wipe you out with it!

Closer to reality, what could you do with a multi-touch gestural input screen as a controller for a virtual world?
