Seriously, what's the point? It's so laggy you can barely walk, and the servers are so overloaded that it takes longer to rez any of your surroundings than it'd take to install windows vista pro from floppies.

/me grumbles.

yes, i do believe that BL08 should have a posting in that "spectacular failures" thread.

Then you are in the wrong sim, Hydro (where my exhibit is) is running smooth. :)

Reaper was fine, though a bit laggy during the show

It's always always packed the first couple of day, jes like SL5B was, jes like Hair Fair, jes like any big LL or non-LL event. Go mid-week or at some off time, turn down draw, an you'll be fine.

A failure? I dun think so. A lot of people have put in a lot of good work. People out there are havin' fun right now, an will for the rest of the week. Sorry yer havin' troubles, but like I said... wait 'em out. :-)

I dropped into Burning Life. Time Dilation of .1, client FPS a third or fourth of what it would normally be, a bunch of gray signs, spheroids which might have at some point turned into sculpties, gray particles. Then I was logged out of the sim, sim going down.

LL might want to make a note to not do anything to cause avatars to cluster together if they want to have impressive events.

It might be nice to have a sim with with no scripts or sculpties, a pure prim build sim.

I don't go to Linden sponsored events, I'm happy to get my linden sponsored bullshit from the blog thank you very much.

Edit: Also because of their stupid and useless (as well as duplicitous) policies on content at said events and of course the lag.

I wore my least laggy avatar and went there.
It took me 10 minutes to walk 10 meters.
Then I crashed so hard my compy locked and I had to hard boot.
Total exhibits seen by me: 0

I shall not return to Burning Roids 08.

Maybe LL could automatically add an attachment-sign saying "Ask Me About Amway!", to the top of every attendee's head....

I had mini-map up on my screen first before I teleported in. Then I headed over to a neighboring sim that was far less crowded. The lag promptly went away then. I also simplified what my avatar was wearing too.

Give Burning Life another try. Just take a look on Map first, pick a sim that has fewer green dots. Teleport to that sim and have fun exploring. Nobody says you have to see everything the first time you go.

Here's what I said in the Linden forum thread about BL:

From: Phoenixa Sol
Main camp, scripts disabled ... I cant use my dance huds, and therefore this event holds no enjoyment for me.

No... I flat out refuse to use any dance machine set up by someone else. If I cannot use my own dances, forget it.

Party on Wayne.

Shame, because I did have fun last year at the main camp dancing with my own dances.

(Probably your number-of-posts/page is set differently from mine, because that post is actually on page 12 for me, so the link doesn't work. Post #180.)

About the dance HUDs: you may want to try wearing them before getting to the site (or, maybe flying up to 100m or so, then attaching them); if the scripts llTakeControls(), they'll continue working for you even in no-script zones, as do AOs. (Come to think of it, this shouldn't work for chims, or anything that needs permissions from somebody other than the agent to whom it's attached.)

I may try BL08 at some point, but it's a little difficult to work up a lot of enthusiasm. Last year, they had open build on the central playa, so I made a little 4-prim assembly. It generated a few compliments, but mostly it gave me just enough interest to explore the whole site and attend a few events. This year I'd hoped to do more, but didn't even come close to being able to compete for a land grab (by the time my machine had rezzed a parcel box, there were clusters of avatars around every one), didn't win one of the lottery parcels, and then learned that even the central playa had been reserved for Big Art. Not complaining, just kinda unenthused.

I never remove them. As you can see by this screen shot, I am always armed and prepared to dance:

I leave venues (those playing music and others are dancing) with scripts disabled when I cannot click one button on any of my 8 huds and start dancing.

Burning Life is wonderful... I wish more of the grid had installations and exhibits like those that pop up at Burning Life. The lag is awful..... no doubt exacerbated by the insane amount of texturing, primwork and scripting in such close quarters.

I have an idea that might help although I don't know if it can work...Is it possible to run a sim on multiple cores / CPU's?. We've all seen with the open-space sims that running multiple sims on a single core can work. Can it be scaled in the opposite direction so that a single sim can run on multiple cores? If possible this would be ideal for high density events such as Burning Life as well as high-traffic commercial and/or role-play game-play sims.

It was laggy when I went to have a look - I expected that on the first day. These big events usually quieten down as it goes on. I spent a lot of time at BL2007, hope to do the same this time although I didn't manage to get a piece of land to create something - there's always BL2009 for that!!!

Moving along quite nicely at BL08.

Open up your map, and search for burning life... then just pick a sim with few avi's on it. There are plenty with under 5 people there right now.

Don't forget to take a rez break every so often.

Lots of cool stuff to see, one of my fav so far was the oil pigs one.

I kinda think the entire point to Burning Life is that there is no point.

If it wasn't for the fact that a really good friend has a build there this year, I wouldn't bother. I went over to her campsite and, even with only 8 avatars in the region and my graphics turned down it was a total lag fest.

I'll attend her events in support of a friend but I doubt I will venture beyond her area.

hm. i managed to have a closer look...

still laggy.

to sum it up:

- laggy
- takes ages to rez
- full of strange builds

... sounds like linden mainland to me.

Actually, it feels better organized than the last few years.

One sim had so many scripts running in it that I could hardly move, but the other one I visited seemed just fine. There were some neat ideas running around, but I had to limit my exploration time. Maybe I'll get to go again today.

From what I've seen so far from BL08, I got very mixed feelings.
-Lag is horrible at some places, especially near the "entry" sims.
-Some very interesting builds and ideas, while some others are nothing but rubbish. I've seen a few that looked more like squaters than adding anything to BL. Placing a sign "females only" to some sexden with a corny sexbed and surrounding the place with designer things like a lambourghini and other braggingrights crap doesn't really give me the Burning Life feel: it's just a temporary house, nothing else.

Most lag I experienced came from clusters of dense scripting, moving objects and texturing, so it's mostly clientside lag it seems. I'd rather see various builds move a bit further apart. Maybe next year BL can be placed in openspace sims, giving builders a similar amount of prims as they have now, but on larger plots, which will basically spread out the lag more evenly.

I tried to go. There were maybe five dots on the whole map, yet I couldn't move at all. I don't have a particularly laggy avatar. The place rezzed just fine and I saw some things, but there was no way I was getting up close and personal because I was quite literally rooted to the spot and couldn't even camera over to things, let alone walk to them.

Ah that makes sense :)

After hearing all the hype on Burning Life 07, went over to take a look one night...late...no people around. We strolled through exhibit area after area and...I didn't get it.

Mind you, I'm not an "artsy" type person to begin with, so especially modern art just goes over my head. (Reminds me of the scene in "Manhattan" where the Diane Keaton and Woody Allen characters are in an art gallery. Someone says: "The steel cube was brilliant?" "Yes. To me, it was very textural, you know what I mean? It was perfectly integrated, and it had a marvelous kind of negative capability."

When called upon to comment upon something she knew nothing about but tried to fake it, Diane Keaton's character said, "It has a certain 'otherness" about it."

That's about how I felt at Burning Life last year. ;)

Went last night. Occasionally laggy, but overall very navigable if you dress low-lag. In fact, when we did the maze, there were other folks doing it too, and everyone was able to move.

There's a lot of magic this year. Quite a bit of very beautiful conceptual art, some really fun interactive stuff, some political commentary (the theme for this year being "American Dream";), and a lot of celebration of SL. And of course great freebies :)

I not only enjoyed it (I'll be going back), I hope it gets extended for a little bit.

We just wandered around and gawked. But the BL website is very informative:
