after reading the recent hiree's self backslapping I personally would rather see things done than be told about it. I also am worried about his coming from AOL.

Yep, I'm of the, "put your money where your mouth is," school of seeing is believing.

He talks the talk. Can he walk the walk?

Where he's from is irrelevant, it's what he can do that is important.

Wasn't the Linden TAO patterned after AOL?

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Given AOL's early growing pains 'way back in the day', he might be certainly qualified for the job.

Words are cheap though, especially when it comes to LL. We'll see if they're willing to put their money (*OUR* money) where his mouth is.

Does this mean I'm going to get a "Join Second Life" disc every other day in my mail?

AOL=Ahead of Linden????

Hope it doesn't turn out to mean Ass..le of Linden.

But yeah I guess I agree with the rest. Wait and see, LL has been saying for the last year that they were concentrating solely on stability and yet it is worse then ever now. The asset server is at it's max limit now and has been and it is not going to be a simple fix at all. Moving stuff off of it is just going to be a bandaid and raise max concurrency again. It really needs a complete redesign. That being said, I'm just glad I'm not having to do it. We are talking about 100's of billions of objects that need or will need to be tracked.

Even though I may sound fatalistic, I do truly believe that every problem can be overcome, it just isn't going to be overnight. Who knows, maybe he can help.

My favorite part: "Given the complexities in our architecture..." which should read, "Given the horrible choices we made in platform, middleware and basic infrastructure at the start and have been unwilling to move away from for five years ..."

The old joke on IRC, was when someone couldn't get X or Y to work properly on their AOL connection, we'd simply say.. "Hey.. Oh Well".

I think it's a rather good blog post all things considered :).

Results are likely to take a while but short-term blog updates should provide some insight in whether it's actually a serious attempt at fixing anything or just more air.

Maybe he'll accomplish at least something before he finds out about the TAO and realizes he doesn't have to do anything he doesn't actually want to :p.

The only thing I found interesting from the post is LL has the money to hire someone like this... Or the guy failed miserably and they got him cheap because no one would hire him.

To be fair, Misses Malaprop, they've never done that before. Oh, wait...

I've actually long compared SL to AOL, particularly in those days. An well, I remember Frank Ambrose, too. :-)
