Good idea

Good idea, they really need to add them, WAY OVERDUE. Paved, cobblestone, gravel roads in the country, bike paths, nature trails etc.

I think they should even have rivers, brooks run through too with Linden water, if they can sink the land only there???

I'm willing to help actually, tho my island land is ... yeah. And the land I hold for a group has no road near it at all - but happy to help out building.

Count me in.

We have been waiting for almost a year to have to road in our sim appear, or at least be smoothed enough to run a vehicle on the grass.

Count me in too; roads, bridges etc no problem at all.

The problem is that Linden Lab don't seem to be interested in volunteer help anywhere any more, yet aren't willing to do the stuff themselves.

If anyone has their own island and wants a road network installed... I have access to stuff. Reasonable prices :)

I noticed there is a group already called Public Road Builders which from their Group Info page looks like the have the same goal. You may want to see about combining the two groups.

Have offered before with no answer, but I'll build any type of road, in any sim, by any design plans/ideas the Lindens have/wish.

I've wanted the roadways completed for a long, logn time now.

Though a few Lindens have been working on them. The roadway near my home finally went another 200m down the roadway land (after 1.5 years waiting).

I talked to the owner of the group - Can't recall the name right now from work - and his group is regarding the ability to DRIVE on the roads versus BUILDING the roads. So yes, we are working together, but with 2 different goals in mind.

I'm all for this but how are you going to build on protected land? Or, rather, how are you keep the roads from being auto-returned??

Meade, we're trying to get the Lindens to form some sort of a builders' group, wherein the roads are all assigned to that group, and only group members can build on the roads. Of course I would assume that the Lindens would want some sort of "vet-check" process, wherein we prove that we're decent citizens and not griefers. We'd also want a Linden (possibly Jack, coz he's the land/roads guy) to be in charge or supervising or checking up on us every now and then.

I presented the JIRA proposal at the tail end of a bug triage meeting a couple of weeks ago with several Lindens present. Sort of a hem-haw response but they didn't say no.
Here's the link to the JIRA proposal; the more votes it gets, the more attention from the Lindens it gets.

I was just curious what the status is on the road building? I have been noticing more and more roads being built now, but all of them are the same as the roads in the Dorje region. The sims in the area around Oryol have had some of their roads built.

This is not what I want built in front of my business... a 10 meter wall being built in front of a dorrway is not quite what I think most people will want. It also limits the usefulness for ground vehicles. You have to rez on adjoining land and the road is on top of a 5 to 10 meter tall prim.

Xplorer Cannoli is sort of defacto leader of this little group; I'm not sure where we are with it but it sure would be nice to get some sort of response from LL on this...

I did some more looking and the Oryol road is the same road as in Dorje, just a number of sims farther along to the southwest.

It's worth a try, but be aware that it has been tried before and LL has always declined.

I suspect it may have something to do with not having volunteers do work that their staff could do.

If you remember a few years ago there was a big blowup with volunteers at AOL and it ended up with AOL in court and if I recall correctly it cost them $$ in the end.

Yes... it's the same road. I just tried to ride my bike from the beginning of this paved road in Cipactli http://slurl.com/secondlife/Cipactli/241/46/72 (I've never posted pics taken in SL before, hope this works) http://picasaweb.google.com/yezelel/SecondLife/photo#5122650784394894194
I fell down into the road um.. I think it was 8 times by Dorje but was able to edit my bike up and out of the hole each time except the crossing between Gyaltsen and Dharmaraksa, I just had to give up and leave it there, couldn't fish it out of the hole, after rezzing a new one I continued falling into the road until I got to Oryol http://picasaweb.google.com/yezelel/SecondLife/photo#5122650934718749570 I just 'took' my bike back and tp'd home.

I very much can and will support a team of creative folks building roads that fit into the themes of areas and what residents want to see that can actually be traveled on. Man whomever is doing this one s-u-c-k-s at it.

I brought this up in another thread recently.

First thing I want to throw on the table is whether or not LL can create a node of some kind that will surround a road, making that bit of land public domain.

The invisible clip/node can be placed carefully around public roads...hugging it as reasonably as comfortable so land owners don't feel their land is being abused.

Another thing we need to do is have a TWM and discuss a system of voting--every citizen and landowner (landowners' votes would have more power of course) would vote on whether they would sacrifice a portion of their land for public road space.

Next on the agenda is WHO will maintain all these roads, work construction, planning, customer service and support, and upkeep? I suggest either LL subcontracts out builders, or one conglomerate SL construction company creates a proposal for LL--having one large company may be a much more stable approach.

This said company will have all control over roadways. We are talking a pretty massive scale here. Builders, Engineers, Artists, and Staff...encompassing all aspects of the task at hand, and the continuing upkeep necessary.

Anyway...I think the idea is novel, and can most definitely be achieved...however, to completely squelch my entire post...I don't think roadways are what SL needs....I'm more of the mind to think outside the box. There are many untapped creative approaches to satisfying transportation needs in SL...why use a car? I understand the tie to RL (it's all over), but perhaps we should be using SL as a platform for new, exciting concepts and applications. *shrugs*

In the immortal words of Doc Brown, "Roads? Where we're going, we won't need roads."

Later all.

I'd be happy to do the highway in Yosu sim - I live right next to it. It's level and almost straight through the sim so building would be relatively easy. Same goes for the Yangban and Chindo, the 2 adjoining sims.
