It depends on if you ask a White or Black person your views on the Yanks, Confederate American history and how much you know of the history of Racism and Slavery.
I am not saying anyone is racist though but certain amount of those who are proud to
be a part of the Confederate states who were racist, wanted to protect the Slave Masters and their farms where they worked to death Black Human beings who they didn't see
as Human they were like little bit up above the work horses they own.
He probably is saying he is red neck from the south, in modern times but if it was in past during the American Civil war years ago he would been fighting on side
that wanted to keep slaves in slavery the way it was and not join the union and become.
People associate the South with the Civil War but there were other parts of America that were Confederate American states that didn't want to join the union and end slavery.
I live in Seattle, Washington in USA.
I was shocked to find out there was a lot of people who were Confederate Soldiers
and I was more shocked that Washington by some was consider Confederate state
it is one of those hidden things.
My black partner who Great Grandparents were either children or grandchildren of Slave when we still had slavery in America, is quite well educated told me Washington state was one of the Confederate American states, earliest black here where dragged here from the South so the Slave owners could keep their Slaves working on their farms,etc.
It is well known fact because most people or promoting of this area is
that Washington tends to be more liberal and Democratic, but Central Washington in the agriculture communities
communities tend to be more White only communities with pockets of Hispanic, Mexican legal or illegal work force, Republican, Conservative and Racist believes..
The Mexican workers replaced the workers that once were there as
Slaves most likely.
Civil War for a lot of Americans was really long time ago but for some Americans
they had Relatives and Friends who were alive during the end of the American Civil
War and the influences were still there even in 1950s that are still in full force for years
even now.
I really hadn't got this or understood this for long time why Washington State is the
way it is.
Racism doesn't mean someone is bad, it just means they really have been educated
and ingrained in believe that certain people are less then others in my opinion.
They still be good people. I just get personally how someone because of the skin color
or shade can be inferior or better.
I personally find it immoral that it was period in American history okay at one point for Americans to own Slave and that there was a intense amount of hostility even to this
day of Ascendants of Slaves.

It wasn't a civil war. It was a war for independence. My ancestors didn't fight for slavery, they fought an invading army that was bent on imposing it's will upon the peoples of the South.

I do find it funny that people who hate Bush seem to think Lincoln was a great man. The policies of Bush follow a direct thread back to Lincoln.

Chris I get what you're saying but for a lot of it had to do with independence and part of that was to keep slaves that your ancestors didn't see as humans.
Most of Yanks at one point didn't see Black Slaves as human beings either.
It was from complex time in history.
I can't find a lot of proof but there were lot of Washington State supporters
for Washington to be apart of the Confederate States.
Yet my Partner believe it was a Confederate State.
History of Confederate States though for certain groups of People depending
on skin color had to do with right of Slavery or being kept as Slaves.
Even if I lived in Confederate state I would fought against it because I was
against slavery and ownership of Slaves.
We can't have America that full of independent states.
There was movement too that believed in recent times that Idaho should only
be for Whites only and separate state.
Alaskan also in modern times wanted independence from USA.

@FD: I do not associate Republicanism and Conservatism with racism as you did in your post.

When i see the word Confederate American, in the year 2008 (almost 2009), i do not think positive things at all - it smacks of racism and often times words such as 'ancestral heritage' are simply fronts that mask the racism.

Saying you are a confederate says you stand for everything that falls under that banner title - and its rather funny how they claim it was a war for "independence", which is an independence based on denying the independence and freedom of an entire race.

Id imagine if America and some other super power formed an allegiance and wanted to be known as for example "super powers r-us"...incorporating the USA and whatever others joined up..no americans would like to be called "super powers r us" theyd very much wish to be known as american...just as those individuals who get lumped into being called a "european"...ugh

Of course I could be very wrong...maybe some would love to be known as "super powers r us"...lol

Welsh, although I live in that part of the Greater Welsh Islands that historically we permitted Germans, French, Scandinavians and other Europeans to settle in to carry out our menial tasks, such as fighting, cleaning the streets and being politicians. More recently we have allowed in friends from our ex-Empire to run cornershops and keep our National Health Service going, and Eastern Europeans to provide building services, even if they do have PhDs in nuclear physics.

I should point out for those that do not know, the Irish are the Welsh that could swim, as are the Cornish; the Scottish are the Welsh that could swim but found the Irish climate too warm and the Bretons are the Welsh that found they still had to work in mines in Cornwall and kept migrating south until they discovered Calvados.

I now live in what is a typically sardonic attempt to replicate Orange County except with roundabouts. And concrete cows. Which are actually an American joke.

i think i was trying to be more humorous than anything..i live in the south and know exactly what that war was about..it wasn't about independence it was about changes and imposition..if the confederate would have won you wouldn't be living in the U.S.A. you would be living in the C.S.A. independence is to separate and and become Dependant on your own while this war would have made it one or the other.U.S.A. or C.S.A. it just depended on who won as to which..it was about big government and states not letting the government call the shots..that the states united were the boss not the government..
the south was more about why the country was born where the north was more like what we had left in the revolution..we already had independence..the north was imposing dependency on government.
slavery was something the north and south wanted but they knew it would divide and spark so they could make a change for big government..


and as for Lincoln ..lol hah.. kind of funny how he freed only the slaves in the south but kept the ones in the north till the war was over..Tennessee freed their slaves not Lincoln..
the south had it's own president during the war.
people think this war was over slavery and they fall way short of looking past that thinking the south is more racists than the north..slavery was one issue out of many but this issue makes separating north from south so much easier for some that want to be separate.
there are just as many if not more hate groups in the north than the south and the lines are real clear on classes up there as well..it's nothing but the pot calling the kettle black..

Edit..here is the catch..if you chose to be on the side of the states being in controlyou were on the side of slavery..why? because the north made it an issue as to why there was a war..there would have been a war either way slavery added or not..
