Absentee landowners - how widespread?

Well a good way to check is to look at the landowner's profile and join an open group they are in. Then just see what their last login was. I recall going around once doing that and finding that with almost every piece of land I checked, no matter how empty, the owner had logged in within the past day.
That supports my theory that many owners have multiple plots and only use a few of them.

That is the lamest excuse for price gouging on the Mainland I've ever heard.

I agree - no way am i going to buy that when my plot - the 4096 in front by the water, only cost me L$11.6/sqm by comparison, and I bought it whilst his was at this price. I must admit I did hope he would see reason and lower it but I am patient.

there were a few of those kinds of plots in the sim I am in, that I reported to the lindens and they came and cleaned them up and reclaimed them to gov linden

one of them I put in a request to purchase it and got it for 512L (first land price hehe)

Hi Rhaorth, the guy is still paying his tier, don't think LL will help in that case :(

Maybe they're playing an alt that has become the main?

That is a distinct possibility. It is true in my own case. Jannae owns her own parcels, and manages land for an older main. Of course, Jannae makes sure the older main's parcels are not fallow...

i have three 512 plots adjacent to my land. they've been undeveloped since november of 2006. owners are never there. never. nothing on the plots except a tree or two ... and my hidden prims to use up the excess to discourage junk buildup (of course, they have auto-return off). looking around i see that there are few other plots on this sim with the same status.

i figure these are all probably old first-land plots (this sim originated in november 2006).

tho they are not paying tier charges, these owners are still getting hit with sl membership charges.

dont these people notice those charges? dont they care?

Another possibility: People who pay higher tier and have multiple properties and spend 90-100% of their in-world time on one, neglecting the others. This was the case for me when I owned a lot of land.

Yep, with you there Ray. I have land in different sims. Some parcels for sale, one for a small shop and one I live on. I don't visit all the parcels that frequently because I RP in different sims and RPs.

You might also want to check to see if they have logged in recently. Had the same problem till I found out the guy that owned the 512 was from Germany and logged in at different times from me. I am not sure of the procedure, but I think if there has been no activity you can report it to the lindens to research and possibly put the land up for auction if nothing else.
