I am part of Management on a Role play Sim. Every week, I see people who are new to Second life, wandering into the Role Play, all newbed out with little or no lindens to spare to shop at the brand name stores we all love to shop at.

So I have this wonderful idea, what about a freebie section so they can look decent until they find the lindens to get the more pricey stuff? So I ventured out and in my naievety, i spoke to the owners and creators alot of good and tasteful stores, only to be told quiet rudely, that their freebies are for THEIR stores. I cant fault them for that, not everyone is Santa Clause.

so I ventured onto SLexchange, and i saw some really good stuff...I mean really good things! Some of them so good, I swear they are stolen. I tried to buy stuff that didnt appear stolen, full perms, but frankly I have no idea of telling what from what.

So I am asking for everyone's help here. How does someone legitimately go around, finding DECENT freebies to sell to avatars new to Second Life, and what can you do, other than make an educated guess?

Make your own freebies, and give them away. Then you know you have the rights to do so.

Just don't complain when, within weeks, someone else looking for "full perms freebies" starts selling your work in their "Business in a box" scam.

Supporting newbies with decent-looking freebies is a laudable thing. But most merchants, when they give away "freebies" do it as no-transfer items, to prevent the items being resold in someone's yard sale or business scam.

You want to sell things other people have made? Things that are free in various places around SL?

Then you're not talking about 'freebies'. You're talking about exploitation.

most of the stuff freebies on Xstreet is no trans anyway... Honestly, I have taken to just giving my own created stuff free.. I have removed the boxes I had because I am not certian what exactly is honestly given for free....Just a thought try contacting creators themselves specific to what you role play and ask them for items, supply a landmark and give them advertising.....

Justa suggestions maybe a bit more legwork, but I think people have items specificly for this purpose and would be more than willing to help.

and by sell to new members, I assume you mean for 0L right?

I am not doing this primarily for business. I dont care about other persons who sell the same thing weeks later. I am doing it so I wont get annoyed when I dont see newbies role playing in noob clothing with no AO and ugly newbie hair.

I am not a builder, or trust me i would have built some stuff already :/ thanks for the advice!

That is the thing, I dont want to exploit anyone, hence the reason I made the post. I dont want to put something out as a freebie and then the next day someone IMs" YOU STOLE MY STUFF!" that is the reason I started this thread for advice. I only want to sell freebies that the creators want to be sold as freebies.

Your best bet is to simply rez out a notecard-giver containing the URLs of freebie blogs. There are tons of them out there, catering to both male and female avatars. Not only would your newbies be able to find good free stuff (made by designers and not the usual full-perm items), they would be getting a taste of what SL has to offer as they TP around the grid to the various stores and places featured on the blogs.

Instead of just asking merchants for freebies why don't you offer them an advertising solution, their freebie in front of their logo, with a notecard giver with a landmark to their store? They may not be quite so frosty.

Been there done that got the T-shirt and alot of Nasty responses from creators Tarina. Hence the reason I decided to find things on SL xchange for full perms. If I get the item for 0L I will sell it for 0L, if I got it for say 50L, most I will sell ANY item for is 5L max. its not to make money. I jsut want to make sure people look decent til they have the lindens to really shop around in SL, and I just wantto make things legitimate.

but yes, if a shop owner gives me something for free, you bet I am going to advertise for them, and i wont sell it for any lindens.....why turn around and stab generousity in the face?

Oh and the sim is a dark Role play sim. Has humans, nekos, demons, lycans....ya da ya da ya da.

How gracious and welcoming of you.

Short, your time in "management" will be.

the reason most folks offer freebies only in their store is to get folks into their store to be exposed to their items so that someday down the road when they do have money they might come back and shop. chances of folks doing that with items from a central freebie place are reduced but it does work to some extent. there are actually HUGE freebie locations throughout SL such as free dove, honeybear's place, freestyle, sarah nerd's place etc.

there really is plenty free out there, its just that the new folks dont know where to go. if you want to drive traffic to your location by offering freebies there, then i would make friends with designers that you really like and then ask...just a blind request for free stuff is sometimes not taken well. if you dont care about driving the traffic to your location, just type in "freebies" into ALL search and make a list for them. there is also a huge pile of free stuff from top designers now in all new av's inventories at the bottom in "library." most people dont know its there but it has some really great stuff, skins, clothing, hair, shoes etc.

hope that helps

Recently there was a request in one of the other Forums (Shopping, I think, but I'm not entirely sure) for creators to supply a box of their own free items, which could include a landmark to their store. The freebie boxes were to be paced in a freebie section of a mall. I was happy to supply a box for exactly the reason Ciaran suggests--advertising. My store logo is on the box, and my landmark is inside with the freebies.

Go to xstreet and pull up all the items by the merchant you are not sure of. In most cases, there will be a creative or artistic style running throughout all the items. Ask yourself, does it look like all these items could be made by the same hand? If yes, you probably have a genuine content creator selling their own stuff.

Poor newbies. Be happy they're showing up to your role play site, and give them a notecard with LM's to suggested shops. Re: shop owners being rude... could you ask, maybe, if they'd be willing to set up their own vendors with freebies available? Or perhaps they could give you NOT full-perm outfits in batches of 10 or so, trans/no copy.

IM me in world.

Long as you plan to give it away and not sell it I have things you can have. (You keep saying 'sell freebies to newbies' but - if it's to help them why not give it free, not sell it. They won't likely have linden anyway??)

Some I made, too, with freebie full perm textures, other things are full perm. I give them to 'newbies' myself.

They really only need a basic starter kit. So you just need a few things probably. Also you can hand out landmarks to the freebie shops and write a notecard to give them, about SL basics.

ok let me be clear. IF I go some where and BUY something full perms because no one wants to give freebies, I am going to charge a fee of 5L max.

IF I meet anyone, anyone, who is willing to help me set up a newbie section, why am I going to be so stupid and charge anything? I am NOT going to charge a thing! Nothing! I am going to thank the store owner who is kind enough to set up a freebie section, and I am going to help advertise their store in the freebie section. that is what I am going to do. I AM NOT GOING TO SELL A FREEBIE.

And for the record I am not mad that newbies show up for role play. I am happy, they make a meaningful contribution and all. or why would I have made the post here to see if there was a way to get them some decent looking stuff while they role play.

I would rather get the freebie from the creator, and they can advertise their products to their heart's content. nothing charged. everyone is happy.

Thanks alot Clarissa, I will IM you in-world.

what is the best kind of product to have there?

I might be interested in donating something, if my stuff meets the RP theme
