My head is spinning trying to sort this out. I am not that familiar with law or what ever. I read these threads trying to learn. That said... From: Hunter Stern About a year ago, I sold one of my custom avatars in SL. What confuses me is this... assuming by custom av you mean a one of a kind, if you sold this, it isn't yours anymore right? The other issue i have in trying to understand is in reference to selling on DeviantArt... how can you compare 3d item in sl to a 2d item of it elsewhere? For example, I sculpt a statue in rl which is placed in lovely park with beautiful gardens. A artist comes by and sits painting scene. 3d now becomes 2d. I don't own the work of the artist (2D), I only own the statue (3D). Forgive me that i can't express it more clearly.

Breeze. I will say this I have known Hunter for a while. He is incredibly talented, works very hard at what he does. Like me he doesn't make very much money at what he does. And majority of most complex sculpted and textured work he does isn't in his shops either. We spoken several of times how discouraging this can be. He is encouraged and inspired me as friend and fellow content artist. Regardless if 2d or 3d, it still takes time, artistically and complex technical skills to create the things Hunter does, as anyone else who is truly dedicated to similar type of artwork. We all want our efforts and talents appreciated and not misused. How would you feel if worked really hard, invested lot of money on high end equipment. struggled with very little. Then finally you got some one commissioned a piece of work just for their own use within Second Life or their own first life home, there no prior arrangement to use this any where else but the client decides to do something else with it without asking your permission. Perhaps they decided to take your sculptures and plaster them and make models of your work and mass produce them to sell without giving you credit, or dime. They don't have any rights other then they paid to enjoy the product for non-commercial use. You have worked endless hours on item, that basically you received maybe pennies or less then hour for your work you love to do. in hopes it might land other work for you.. Then you find out the person who paid literally pennies on the hour for your work, with no permission decides to sell copies of your work that he paid very little for for decides he or she is going charge 20 usd or more other people for a print or model of your work. How would you feel about that? If it wouldn't bother you are either lying or you just don't know what its like to be truly struggling for your art on tight budget. It just isn't fair or ethical for someone to do this, regardless of the art medium.
