In the US [...] If they are 17 and 364 days old, you are still -criminally- liable - often for felony statutory rape

Just to get the details right, this varies by state: 32 states allow sex at age 16, 8 states at 17, and only 11 states require 18 years old. (Also, it varies as to whether it is homosexual or not.)

I am not a lawyer, so I don't know what defenses you might have here or in the real world. Don't know any of the case law about cyberspace, either.

So, all you legal experts, what happens [...]Johnny 15 (you know, the age when hormones really get in gear) is caught with Mary 35.

It matters not what the law is or should be.....it matters what the adult who is not aware of the legality of his/her actions are.

Actually, what matters is how hot the defendant is. If you are supermodel, you get off (ahem), but if you're not so great looking, go to jail. Speaking of those recent cases you alluded to. :)

Being "hot" did not help Debra Lefave.

She served no prison time, basically got off, pleading guilty. Was it her, or some other older woman in a similar situation, who avoided being sent to prison because the judge acknowledged that the inmates would eat her alive (and thus it would be too cruel to lock her up) because she was so hot? I forget.

On the other hand, in remarkably similar cases, ugly older women (teachers etc.) have been sent away to prison for the exact same crime.

If Linden Lab does open the main grid to minors then you should assume anyone you meet is under the age of consent until proven otherwise...

The age of consent is 16 in my state. I'm not sure how that works legally in virtual worlds.

My daughter has turned 13 now and I have encouraged her on the computer since she was 3 years old. A couple of times in the last month I have gone upstairs to see her and she has closed the browser when I walked into the room. I "trust" my daughter, but I also love her enough that I put in the program so that I can see what she sees on her screen from my computer whenever I want now. Everything has been innocent and within normal teen curiosity parameters. I understand teens do like their privacy and that is evidently why she closed the browser. BUT, even thou I will check infrequently, the network admin software is staying on her computer.

I have a 13-year-old son. Yeah, someone who actually parents! 13 is too young to be on the computer unsupervised.
