New trolls I've never heard of. This is exciting. It's so fun being back.

Hmmm..... "serious digging" without going inworld. Sounds like the OP is a "journalist". Or a politician. Or just full of it.

3. I have been forewarned by some friends about the potential for trouble in Second Life. I am referring to the adult escort service. Yes, I know the avatar is not real; however, you are still playing with fire. What is Linden Lab doing about the potentials for pornography, and "virtual prostitution" <- Not sure if this is the right term. "Adult Escort Service"? Is there another kind that I'm not aware of? *looks interested* do tell us more! As for the "sins of the mesh" I wouldn't worry about it, Nick ol' boy. The avatar itself is not real, no. But the person on the other end is. Sometimes it's a woman. Sometimes it's a man. Sometimes it's a man playing a woman, a woman playing a man, or a man or woman playing a furry. Or sometimes it's just my cat, walking across the keyboard. Not to mention you'd have to actually interact in order for there to be any "trouble" unless of course you're referring to Mom's voice calling from the top of the stairs "Nicholaaaaaaaas? What ARE you DOING down there?!" (That can get dicey.) Personally, I'd say "Put them in their own virtual world". If someone wants to go there, let them. It just doesn't have to be in broad daylight, so to speak. I'd have taken a strict conservative Christian POV, but that would be unrealistic. Here, here. Put them in their own virtual world. Patooie! Death to all "thems"! Or.. wait.. when you're alone, aren't they we's and you're a them? AAACK! Then YOU'D be put in your own virtual world! *runs around panicking pulling her hair out prim by prim* UGH no build! *TPs elsewhere to pull her hair out pri...* *sigh* Teleports are down... _____________________

A strict conservative Christian POV is very appropriate within a strict Christian sim, of which there are many. Perhaps you should spend your SL time in PG and/or Christian sims. If somebody wants to go there, let them. It just doesn't have to be in broad daylight ![]() |

Note to Mod: I am not sure of where this thread should go, so I'll leave it to you to decide. Thanks. I have been doing some serious digging around about Second Life. I have yet to go inworld. What I am learning is quite amazing! I can't help but notice the potentials for both good and bad. Here are some thoughts and questions. 1. I have read about Second Life's potentials for use as a basis for a 3D Internet, ala OpenSIM and etc. I've also came across Elliot Eldrich's suggestion for LL to turn SL into a franchise and sell it to 3rd party groups and let them set up their own virtual world. What is the latest with this? I happen to like Elliot's ideas and do have some concerns. Namely, it has to do with currency. I know Linden has to make $$ to stay in business; however I don't like the idea of turning them into the next Microsoft. 2. I can't help but wonder what else is coming down the pipeline, as Linden Lab is seeking to reach out to larger audience. Personally, I'd say "Put them in their own virtual world". If someone wants to go there, let them. It just doesn't have to be in broad daylight, so to speak. I'd have taken a strict conservative Christian POV, but that would be unrealistic. I've seen some stuff in SL that has made me double take a few times, but why should it be put in another virtual world, just because I dont like it. If I don't like what I see, I don't go there, simple. I try very hard not to judge, sometimes I am guilty of it, but I really do try to get some perspective. Just because I am not into something or don’t understand it, doesn't mean others should have to to do it somewhere else. Each to their own. |

Amazingly, getting the second one seems to be the more difficult of the 2.

I'll start with the more serious topic.
1. Here is the link to what I referred to: /352/21/300019/2.html. Just scroll down to where you see Elliot Eldrich. I think I spelled the name correct. 2. I was looking at the very real growth potential of Second Life. Generally, I try to see both "positives" and "negatives". It is called keeping a balanced look. 3. I finally got the new system and will soon try the viewer and visit SL. ![]() Thanks to the tutorials and some comments in a different thread, I am leaning towards building. I'll take advantage of those free classes. What did someone think I was trolling? Not really. I don't have multiple personalities. :0So, that is what the PG rating was about. I was going to inquire when I have gone inworld. It sounds like LL was already dealing with it. BTW, I have had friends who struggled with pornography and such. I hated what it did to them. Hence, my own sensitivity in the area. As for me, I don't struggle with it and no desire to invite trouble. I'll read through some of the other comments. I thought I'd stop and give some kind of response. |

Very possibly - but sometimes it is still fun to play. ![]() After reading the other messages, I was beginning to wonder. You're right, it can be fun, though I wasn't looking to troll and yet I am. Ooohhhhh.....after reading the initial post, the little hairs on the back of my neck were standing up. I'm glad I took a few minutes to read through the other responses, as the humor tempered my urge to post a scathing backlash of a dissertation that would leave Nick's ears on fire. I, too, somehow get the feeling from Nick's posts that we're being "set up." I'm going to keep checking the web for all of our avi names intertwined and tangled in an SL expose that will leave us looking like morons.

Yes, me too. Personally, I think similarly about strict conservative Christians, or any other strictly conservative religious type that want to make everyone else dance to their tune. That, to me, is more playing with fire than virtual escorts. Funny old world isn't it? -- Aes QFT |

Its not PG its PG-13 according to Lindal in another thread unless she is even more confused than the Lindens are. May I suggest... https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417 Of particular note: The PG and Mature ratings mirror those used by many countries' movie and television industries to denote the age-appropriateness of behavior, language and creations within a given area of Second Life. PG Areas are designated to be free from sexually explicit language or behavior, swearing and other forms of aggressive language, violent behavior and/or imagery, including horror. Gambling for Linden Dollars is also prohibited. and PG regions have frequently been described as an area where you're free to say and do things that you would feel comfortable doing in front of your grandmother, or a grade school class. In Mature regions, Residents can be free to engage in more adult activity and language, though of course, explicit adult content must be contained behind "closed doors". However, if you feel there's some ambiguity as to whether or not your activity or content is allowed in a PG region, it's likely best kept to a Mature region. _____________________

I think I see a not so explicit observation in those posts that's very astute: Virtual "land" as the central metaphor from which revenue flows is probably a mistake for LL, and for SL. But that's an extremely subtle point, with complex, interacting implications for in-world economics, resident behavior, LL marketing, and certainly engineering. On the surface it's correct: the current model is akin to a web hosting company charging by the page, regardless of hits, bandwidth, storage, or processor utilization; on a more profound level, it's also correct. But it's a huge topic. |
