I WAS READING TODAY THAT A WOMAN WAS FIRED FOR USING ALL CAPS IN HER EMAILS AT WORK. SHE WAS ACCUSED OF BEING TO CONFRONTATIONAL FOR DOING THAT AND USING RED IN HER FONT. YOU CAN READ THE STORY HERE: http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/148175

Absent a contract between the employee and the employer, any reason should be justified.

I voted yes. It's one thing to use all caps on your personal time, but at work it shows a basic ignorance of or disregard for netiquette. It's no different than any other kind of rudeness to your coworkers and customers.
As her employer, I'd wonder what other bits of appropriate professional behavior she was ignoring and how it might affect our company's reputation. Firing her without warning, that was unwarranted. But if I'd warned her and she kept doing it anyway, yep, she'd be out. |

I said no because the story didn't share the employee's side, only shared the employer's accusations as to why she did it. (Confrontational, etc). I use all caps regularly for a nearly blind friend who has only a Treo to read email on. Caps are all she can see. The story doesn't have enough info from both sides of the coin.

Is it actually possible to be confrontational in an email message? With instructions on how to fill out a form? _____________________

If I can get away with smilies at work, I can't see why someone can't get away with all caps. (^_^)y

If you can be a loud arrogant redneck in lowercase, capslock can only turn it up to 11. 11? I could turn it up to 15 at least. _____________________

Fired without warning? Um, if it was seen as confrontational, then she should have been told to stop prior to termination. As that did not happen, I don't see that as justifiable reasoning for termination.

Why would anyone in their right mind even consider for an instant that there isn't more to the story than what's reported?
Quite possibly, she didn't say "PLEASE FILL THIS FORM OUT COMPLETELY" She likely said, frequently and in several versions, "YOU FREAKIN MORON, HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU TO FILL THIS OUT PROPERLY????? GET WITH IT!!!!11!!!" And after the third time her boss asked her to state things in a professional way, she probably wrote: "PLEASE FILL THIS GODDAM FORM OUT RIGHT AND I'M ONLY SAYING PLEASE BECAUSE THE IDIOT IN CHARGE TOLD ME TO" Just guessing, really. ![]() _____________________

What's important is that a message was sent.
I hope that that woman has formed a support group for others who use all caps "so this will never happen again." INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, THE COURTS FOUND HER DISMISSAL WITHOUT MERIT. ![]() Activist judges! . _____________________

Way back when I was a developer, back in the days of green-bar paper, I always used a red pen because it showed up best on that paper. Back in those days, we did a lot of code reviews and I actually got reprimanded for writing my comments in red because it was "like a school teacher editing homework".
My response was to tell my boss that whomever was upset needed to grow up. Needless to say, I did not stay at that place long. _____________________

"CAPSLOCK IS CRUISE-CONTROL FOR AWESOME!!"
Overuse of caps is worth a warning. MS Comic Sans-serif is a case for dismissal, however. _____________________

Sheesh! I have many a times sent out messages to the users with words and phrases in RED, CAPS, 38 POINT text, because the previous 6 messages were not read. Even with those changes I would get emails and calls "Now, I read your message and printed it out, but which button labeled PUSH do I push?
Used to wonder why my boss made me take my chainmail cat-o-nine tails home.. now I am just glad I did so I don't have to clean the blood out of it.. ![]() |
