I would suggest doing a search for "education" and then looking for classes that will help you along the way. There are many offered throughout the day. Also some of these educaton sites offer freebies and other things.

I saw one the other day for how to skydive.... That might be of interest. Also try searching for parks. You can see some lovely areas..

What I did was open my map find green dots then just clicked the map.... You have to be a bit careful of that because you could wind up in someones bathroom, but... It will fun for a while...

Be careful of owners traping you in cages as well and dumping you into the sea.. As I had happen to me...

You might get frozen or ejected.. Don't take it person if you are doing nothing wrong.. Some people have an insane idea that ban lines protect their privacy...

Learn to use your cam... Scope places out before moving into it... If there are things that scare you leave... if not walk on.

NEVER ACCEPT ANYTHING OR ALLOW ANYONE TO ANIMATE YOUR AVATAR UNLESS YOU KNOW WHY THEY ARE DOING AND WHO THEY ARE!!! Like wise be careful grabbing a free beer......Unless it is in a club.. be careful. Be smart and you will find most people are very friendly and willing to help If not ask someone else.

lol.. thanks

wow what kinds of things can happen with (in your example, accepting a rogue beer)...

Are there scripts that would just wipe out your balance and send all your L$ to someone else? Or, what kinds of things can happen?

Thanks

I know of three scammish sorts of things that can come in "gifts". One's a joke, two are serious.

The joke is a script that deforms your av into a nearly shapeless tangle. There are free undeformers available on SL Exchange, or a simple relog will cure this. I got deformed once when I tried a dance someone gave me called "Superdance".

The first serious one is this: You accept an object and rez it, or wear it. A yellow box drops down saying "So and So Object is Requesting Debit Permissions on your account". If you click ACCEPT, the object instantly teleports itself far away, so you can't find it, and begins draining L$ from your account. There are some legitimate reasons for an object needing debit permissions, for example if you use a rental box to collect money from tenants. But do NOT give debit permissions to anything unless you are sure you know what you are doing. If you have doubts about an object, give it to an alt (with no money in its account) to try out.

The second serious one is a listener/chat relay script in an object. Someone gives you, say, a pretty diamond necklace. Unknown to you, it is listening to the local chat and sending it to the gift giver via IM. People who want to spy on their SL partners tend to like this sort of thing. You can find all sorts of "bug detectors" that will find stuff like this for you.
