So... unless you are running Windows on a Mac (kind of pointless, I would think),

Not at all, works a treat and you can still boot to OSX if you want so you have the best of both worlds.

I think some just have it in for Mac/Windows no matter what, (depending on what they are using, or prefer).

Before pressing download, yes or whatever, always try to read things first. Apple is no better or worse when it comes to business tactics.

Can't you turn off auto-updates? I hate that anyway. If the software runs fine for me, why would I want to risk breaking it with an update that I don't need?

Yes you can.

That said, why this thread is even in the SL forums. What does Safari have to do with SL? I thought we were supposed to keep questions related to SL, or am I misunderstanding?

The reason I started this thread is that I got the Safari prompt from the QuickTime auto-updater. And the only reason I have QuickTime installed is for media capabilities of Second Life.

Thank you, I was just wondering. I couldn't figure out how Safari and SL connected. :)

I'm not going to get into whether not Apple is evil or not in this post but I would at least like to make it clear that it is very easy to avoid this problem by simply unchecking the option to install Apple Software Update when you install Apple software. In fact it is so easy that I do think using terms like "forcing updates down our throat" is a tad strong.

Also, if you already have the Apple Software Update installed and it's bothering you you can simply go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall it, that will not affect your ability to use installed Apple software.

The problem is that I installed QuickTime, and I would like to have it updated automatically. Its quite convenient to have Apple let me know when there is an update available, and to offer to install it.

What bothers me, and quite a few other people, is that the updater was suddenly offering up Safari, which has nothing to do with the software I wanted and installed.

Sure, I can turn off the auto-updater, but I lose a lot by doing so. Most importantly, I lose auto-notification of any security related patches that may have been added to QuickTime.

When the Apple Software Update software offers to install something you don't want to install you can simply click on the update to highlight it then go to the "Tools" menu and click on "Ignore Selected Updates". It will stop bugging you about installing Safari (at least until a newer version of Safari is available).

I just got the "notice" today when I got home.

Unchecked iTunes & Safari box, then clicked on "quit".

Dear APPLE: If I WANT it, I'll DOWNLOAD IT!!!

What sucks is, I keep my machine on 24x7, with an occassional restart, so I suppose I'll be seeing this message often.
