I don´t know if this is the right forum for my question. If not, sorry.
When I made some ascii art (or copy from other free sources) with Notepad everything is ok. But when I create a gesture (chat gesture) inworld and copy/paste line by line what I have done in NotePad, I need to re-align every lines of the 'picture'.
My question: this is a problem of the SL gestures editor that didn't respect the spaces or a problem of the copy/past from NotePad?
Thank you.

Ascii art gestures are an immediate way to make people detest and mock you.

Isn't it a question of what fonts you use? And whether they are fixed spacing?
Pep (And doesn't what others see depend on what fonts *they* are using?)

Back in the days of BBS', long before the internet, there was a piece of software called Ami-Express which was used by lots of pirate BBS' around the world. Ami-Express would search download archives for a file called file-id.diz, this would be displayed next to each download of illegal software and was used by the pirate groups to display their 'group tag', typically in a Grafitti style.
Back in those days communications where expensive so to save telephone bills running up too high whilst typing the pirates would use an abbreviated form of English, "m8" being short for "mate" and so on.
Over time this abbreviated text form became expanded into it's own grafitti style art form, which today we call 1337-speak.
Neither file-id.diz / ASCII Art or 1337-speak have ever been used to contribute to the cultural melting pot of creativity or art, despite being technically 'art forms'. These 'low art forms' have no value or meaning in society, and consequently have failed to take hold as a form of mainstream art.
By contributing to a conversation in SL by posting a low art form one is replacing the written word with a form of art that is, by the strength of it's merits, utterly useless. When the said artwork has been created by a 3rd party (a 'gesture artist') one is merely re-distributing somebody elses low-art form.
If anyone can therefore conclude that re-distirbuting somebody elses low art form is in any way a cool or productive thing to do, I will gladly beet them over the head with their file-id.diz.

From: Bekka Hax These 'low art forms' have no value or meaning in society, and consequently have failed to take hold as a form of mainstream art. Low art: Brittney Speers, Jonas Brothers, Friday the 13th movies, the collective works of Air Supply and your average porn magazine. People buy it and it makes tons of money. It's (sadly) mainstream. Considering the sheer volume of ascii "art" spam found in the average social gathering at SL, it's apparent that it's also pretty much mainstream here and popular with those less capable of carrying on a conversation. Fortunately, the mute button makes quick work of the geniuses who feel the need to unleash their "art" upon the masses.

Deskilling it is called, or at least similar to it, many famous artists have used this technique, but yes it only works if your good in the first place. An example would be a artist that can draw a hand realistically and accurately, who then decides the hand would look better in a cubist form.

I never mind the funny little things people do to amuse themselves. It seems a harmless pursuit, although I admit I'm hardly ever in a place where I see such things.

I never thought that my question will have so many answers... It was a simple question. For those that answer the question, thank you. For all the others, well.. it's only spam.
I have put the question ONLY to know and not to make chat gestures with several lines inworld (something that I don't do - but a lot of people do mainly at clubs and concerts).
The term Ascii Art is an old one, yes, I know that.

From: Argent Stonecutter Pep: there's only one font used in chat. You can change it though in the fonts directory. Or some alternate viewers use different fonts, like Imprudence and Kirsten's. Or if you're rolling your own with the source downloads, you can sub in whatever fonts you like. -Atashi

QFT!! Edited to add: Unless I am sending my "Kisses from Lil" art out to you -- then it is not spam. Really now, who would not want Kisses from Lil?

OK, "in practice, the number of people using a different font that are likely to care about your ascii art gestures can be counted on the fingers of one foot". Better?

No. There's people who care about these things, and even think they're "cool". They don't tend to be the kinds of people who are likely to understand how to edit XML files, though.

These little gestures hardly count as ascii "art". Have anyone here actually seen real ascii art? And no I don't mean those shitty logos people make for IRC servers. There is some amazing hand made pictures out there, things you wouldn't think someone could do by hand, like portraits for example.

I tend to believe the custom ASCII more than the recreations though.. although they still looked very neat..

Back in the dark ages, before the Internet, line printers and daisy-wheel printers were the only durable output you could get from a computer. In those days I had quite a collection of ASCII art, and even spent a while working on my own... until I saw something that someone had done by using microspacing... printing ".", then sending an escape sequence to back up the printhead almost a character space, printing another ".", and so on... to produce a recognizable black-and-white dithered image. It took all day to print a picture, at a few pixels a second, with the printer going "takka takka takka".
I could see that the future was not going to be better ASCII art, and went on to other things.
