i was in the sim "Second Wildlife" buying more cheese for my army of rats, when a newbie female avatar walked up to me. Here is the conversation...

From: someone
[7:02] Second Wildlife Garden Vendor whispers: Please wait while I perform accounting activities...
[7:02] Second Wildlife Garden Vendor whispers: Accounting completed. Thanks again, Hana Timtam!
[7:02] Second Wildlife Garden Vendor: Thank you for your purchase, Hana Timtam!

[7:02] p____ Okelly: hey
[7:03] p____ Okelly: Hey!
[7:03] You: Hello... Pwincess.
[7:03] p____ Okelly: hey sweetie can u teleport me somewhere
[7:03] You: where are you trying to be?
[7:03] p____ Okelly: gualala
[7:04] p____ Okelly: can u
[7:04] You: Sure. i can do that. But.. you can also get there yourself.. by clicking the "Map" button at the bottom of your client...
[7:04] You: then typicing in "gualala" in search...
[7:05] You: then when it comes up... click on it... either double clicking on the map.... OR... clicking once on the name.. then lower down.. you can click "teleport"
[7:05] p____ Okelly: thanks
[7:06] You: You're welcome
[7:06] p____ Okelly: it wont work
[7:07] You: What happens when you click map.. and type in the word "gualala"?
[7:07] p____ Okelly: it says not found
[7:07] p____ Okelly: can u teleport me plz
[7:07] You: did you make sure to delete the word "Second wildlife" first.. and then type "gualala" in the blank space?
[7:08] You: i =can= teleport you. but in the end.. it's best for you to learn how to do it yourself. :)
[7:08] p____ Okelly: yes
[7:08] You: i'll tp you though. But.. you should practice using the map
[7:08] p____ Okelly: thx
[7:08] p____ Okelly: k

i teleported to Gualala, the sim she seemed to want to get to.. and then i went to "Search" and "People" to look up the user's name. Result?

None Found.

i tried again. just doing a partial name search of "P Okelly" .. still nothing. i teleported back to the sim "Second Wildlife" to find this mysterious newbie avatar gone.

i'm confused about what happened... and i'm a bit unsettled. Did i encounter a ghost? (i'm kidding - but seriously - how can i have a converstaion with an avatar who doesn't seem to exist? is there a way to hide yourself from "Search"?)

Probably you should elminiate the ghost's name from the post, just in case the "don't name names" rule applies to people who aren't there.

When a persons name doesnt show up in Search, it usually means they have cancelled thier account. You can only hide your online status in Search.

Maybe you just witnessed a lightening fast alt creator.

Creeeeeeeepppppppppppy. But only slightly moreso then an army of rats.

I had a similar creepy experience happen.

I kept seeing a green dot appear in the map way outside my condo in the water for weeks. I just assumed it was someone in a skybox, or something. I was bored one day, and decided to swim out and investigate. Turned out to be a noob female av just floating at the bottom of the sea bed. I tried to talk to her, and she wouldn't respond. I then pushed her into an area that I could orbit her (yeah I know...bad bad bad.) and she orbitted, but reappeared instantly where I found her. It felt like I had found a dead AV who was rubbed out by the mob or something.

Yipes.

I saw death riding by on a horse. Is that one of the signs? Did I mention that there were three of them?

To paraphrase my favorite comedian: "Tea and pie or death?"

But I'm taking the day off, so I have no idea who you saw on that horse. :p

I see those same avatars in different spots around the lakes, all underwater, dead center of the sim. Someones bots gathering info I presume. There are 2 in the lake by my home, been there for months, same spot, never moving.

Can you rezz stuff there? If so, I have a bright pink bucket in my inventory. I'll give you a copy if you promise to put it on their head. Just hang stuff on them like some kind of bizarre Christmas tree.

Ann - I don't care if you ARE death incarnate. If you have pie, you're welcome anytime.

I suddenly feel the need to buy a long sweeping cloak and hood...and a pie carrier. I already have the horse. ;)

They are likely camping bots, pushed off by the camping machine, and maybe crashed and relogging in to the same spot.

The issue of names not showing in search is odd...a friend of mine was attempting to join SL last week and we were chatting on yahoo at the time. He asked me if anyone had suchnsuch for a name, I searched and None Found so I told him to try it. Nope, no go, SL said it wasnt an available name. This went on for at least half a dozen names, and when I search for them now they arent there either. Far as I can see these are people that created and never went into world, perhaps...but that still doesnt explain the OP seeing someone in world but not in search.

I think this method of deploying bots is completely creepy. If they hang around for an extended period of time, would it be OK to AR them, do you think? Ummm .... bot pollution?

If enough of these necrobots were AR'd, maybe their owner would get annoyed and find some less vampy way to operate?
