From: Marianne McCann I guess my question is... why? Why do people sit on these things if they don't plan on using them? Perhaps, as a tax write off... or they have so much rl money they dont notice .. also I have S.A.S, I just know it.

/me watches the thought that she threw out there get ripped to shreds by a mass of fire power. HAHA Was the first thing off the top of my head. Like I said, I did just throw it out there. I am well aware there is not much we can do but I would hope something can be done in the future. In Nova Albion the intent by LL with double prims lots was to build upward making a City feel. It would be nice to see the intent happen once again.

Abandoned Land...

What i have done in the past is report it to LL, do a ticket, and they will check it out, if the owner is no longer in SL, it will be sent to auction. I too thought they had ways of tracking all this land to avatar in world or cancelled accounts, but evidently not.
Most of it is that free 512 most get with a prem account, and then they cancel the account, but the land just sits there. So do report a ticket to LL, it takes a couple weeks but they are good about reclaiming the land if they know about it.
Some land has to wait 6 months, to be sure the owner is not returning to SL, if the account is still active, or not cancelled, then the land will go to auction, but it too has to be reported.

More Land = More Money to collect from people. It does not matter if it gets wasted as long as some fool buys it and pays the monthly to them
Every time they add more land they are devaluating all other land, but increasing their intake.
this will crash just like RL did, if they do not keep an eye on demand/supply ratio and make sure that the people that pay their salaries feel like they get some value in return for their outlay.
cont:
If Poulation density is tighter, you get more of a community effect and neglected properties will draw attention and demand for action to clean it up.
If you look at a sim where 90% of it is neglected or abandoned or just part of a endless flipping madness by people in the " real estate " business, then who really cares.
It is no longer attractive to own land that has that worthless feel

From: Calveen Kline I had a case like this recently. There was a large parcel next to my marina, advertised for rent, full of left over prims from passersby. This parcel was deeded to a group whose owner had abandoned the group. I wanted to buy this parcel from the owner but his name was no longer in Search. To make the story short, it turns out that the group had been abandoned for 2 yrs. so group tier had been overlooked by LL during all that time. I submitted a ticket to try to get that land back into the market. Within a couple of days, a Linden came by and reclaimed the parcel. I wouldn't be surprised if much of those parcels we're talking about here are in the same situation. That is the situation that I ran into on a parcel adjoining one of my parcels. The owner was MIA and she had left the land open to anyone to build on with no auto-return set. I submitted a ticket to get it cleaned up and within a very short time the land was taken and placed up for auction. Apparently she hadn't been paying her tiers for months and months and it took my ticket to alert the Lindens to that fact. Now if I could only get the Lindens to respond as quickly to my ticket about an abandoned 512 with prims encroaching on another parcel of mine...I guess it is one of those tierless situations and they aren't losing any money over it.

I like my shop-free land. Lots of nice trees, a stream, a little stone hut. Maybe not utilized much, but nice to stroll through.

From: Pie Psaltery But then, the question would be why does Linden Lab waste land. Maybe they are the ones being spiteful. 1 out of every 5 sims on the older continents could be abandoned land running on old class 3 servers and we wouldn't know any better really.
