This year is Barbie's 50th anniversary -- sit up straight, LL, there's still time for a dynamite co-marketing campaign!

Well, that opportunity may be missed, but I'm sure that somewhere in SL avatars with Analog Dog ponytails, prim torpedoes and pink fluorescent heels are dancing with abandon! Or Ken. Or a gargoyle. Whatever.

Oh, and a question: who's throwing the Barbie party?

I've been collecting Barbie dolls for about 15 years. I think I have about 50 dolls? I don't know, I've lost count.

Little known fact by most people. She was based on a prostitute doll that men would bring back to the States from Germany. Yep, true. Nice little story huh?

Ok, I'm a dork. Anyway, she and I turn 50 this year. Here's the original from 1959, worth about $10000 more or less:

/me smiles at Elora. I still have my Barbie dolls. And Skipper. They are not *cough* in mint condition, as numerous cousins and nieces have played with them. :)

My mom wigged out when an older neighborhood friend gave me her Barbie and all the accompanying loot. I, of course was THRILLED!! My parents would have never gotten me one since my mom really hated that Barbie had a "mature" figure....

Sad story,

When my parents were moving from NJ to Florida, we (siblings and I) were helping them clean the house out. In that house, was a bunch of my original Barbies and accessories.

My mom and dad asked me to do them a favor; would I go pick up some extra packing cartons? So, being the duitful daughter I took a ride for what? Maybe an hour or so? They, in the interim began to take some things out to the curb for the recycling, etc.

When I returned, I asked if they happened to have found my Barbies in amongst the stuff they had been cleaning out. My mom said "oh yea, I put them out by the curb, I didnt' realize you'd want them".

WTF???

I ran outside, and of course, the "garbage pickers" had already been by. By "garbage pickers" I mean locals who would come by on recycling days and see if anything worthwhile had been tossed out by homeownes. Well, duh yea. Barbies? Accessories? Clothing? Barbie House? Geez it was all worth something.

I was furious, but certain other circumstances prevented me from exploding at my mom. I had to just chalk it up to a huge loss :(

No, 11 1/2 is Ken. In his dreams.

Or maybe in Barbie's dreams.

And I had the original. I was 6 years old in 1959 and that Barbie was my Christmas gift. I kept her (along with Ken and her gf Midge) until I was 14 and volunteering in a children's asthmatic hospital. One day I collected up all my Barbie, etc. items, along with original circa 1959 Barbie clothes that had been purchased for her over the ensuing years by my grandparents, and donated them to the hospital.

My mother was devastated when I told her that night when she returned home from work. At that age I wasn't thinking of the future collectible value of the doll, but that I was giving something to sick children.

Over the years I've sometimes wished I had my Barbie collection back. And seeing that monetary figure is staggering.

Life is interesting.

*sigh*

My sister used to have all those old Barbies from the late 60s, early 70s. Clothes, mall, corvette, and motor home.

I remember snapping their legs forwards to break their knees, setting them on fire, and generally being the nasty older brother that I was.

I regret all of it now that I see what they're worth!

Yes! I was wondering why the blonde hair looked odd. Mine had a black ponytail. I got a second Barbie that came out in the 60's with a platinum "do."

Ahhh...in trying to find photos, here's something I'd forgotten: The original Barbie had holes in her feet because she could be displayed on a stand. I remember that!!

And people wonder why I've enjoyed being an only child. :p

I did have this mean male cousin who was 18 months younger than I. He tore up my Mr. Potato Head set (that his parents had given to me for my birthday) AT my birthday party. However, he was always a bit small and sickly for his age so I pummeled him into the ground.

Then they moved away so I only had to pummel him once a year...lol.

(He's now 6'5" and we're close as adults.)

How can Barbie be only 50 years old? She was 25 when she was born.
