What about FIOS?

I get 8 up and 8 down connecting through a wireless modem. I *would* get 8 up and 27 down if I could plug into the router but the jack on my laptop seems to have crapped out on me :(

FIOS is cable. It isnt anything more or less than what Roadrunner is (incl the fiber optics).

Verizon has a terrible reputation for support. My uncle changed from Optonline to Verizon last month, then back to Optonline this month. LOL

My parents have FIOS at their house. I'm stuck with a lower speed AT&T DSL line where I live. I'm always jealous when I visit them and connect to the internet from there. So much faster than what I have. They haven't really had any problems with it, either. I think they've had it for about two years now.

FIOS is not cable. Cable is a separate entity not being provided by a TELCO, like Verizon's FIOS product, or AT&T's version known as U-verse, which is FIBER to the curb, and copper to the Premises.

Verizon's FIOS is entirely FIBER fed direct to the PREM, like Roadrunner, being provided by a CABLE company. However, from a technical standpoint CABLE, FIOS and U-verse all involve FIBER fed lines as opposed to copper thoughout (DSL) as I had stated above.

It is no secret Verizon's FIOS support does suck. They want to sell it, not support it. Like anything though, when it works, it works great. When you have a problem, it is extremely frustrating to meander through the IVRU labyrinth, to talk to ten people, only to find out it once again needs to go to another department.

At least FIOS support is still in the United States (for now). VZ DSL first level support has largely been outsourced to third world countries. If you have a DSL problem they cannot fix, they will create a ticket to the next level (in the United States).

I'd rather have superior support from Canada than inferior support from the US. Anytime.

I looked at cable after reading your post. Comcast is the provider in my area. Their prices were on a par with Verizon's FIOS, and their offered speed and other features were much less. Besides which, I wouldn't have Comcast on a bet.

Verizon's service maze is daunting, but I've eventually managed to get all but one niggling little problem fixed.

I'm going to tell the Geek to drop the dime and call Verizon, just as soon as some basement remodeling here is done and the dungeon Computer Nerve Center is back in place.

Have to agree there...VZ has a support center for DSL business customers in Canada. They are an absolute pleasure to deal with. Very knowledgable, and easy to work with.

I had FiOS for over two years in my old home and it was wonderful. When I moved all I could get was crapcast but FiOS is coming within the next 30 or so days (thank god). The internet speed difference and the lack of latency on the internet between FiOS and crapcast is noticable. FiOS has damn near 0 and crapcast is constant.

Edit: I forgot to add, with FiOS I had more channels, more HD programming and HD programming that is not double compressesed to fit into the crapcast limited bandwidth.

FiOS is NOT cable, you may want to look into it a bit deeper. FiOS is delivered from the CO to you home via fiber optic and then converted into a signal that is wire compatible with your internal existing home wiring.

FiOS is NOTHING like cable, with the exception of programming that exists on both.
