Excuse me, as a land owner and a business owner I have to ask this, what freakin survey???????? Note the this is what they/you told us... because I didnt tell them a thing, hell I didnt even know there was a survey at all!!!! Just one more little ignorant SLer paying her hard ass earned money into SL when she is obviously misrepresented by "surveys" she is not even a part of. Here’s what they/you told us: - Overall,The majority of business owners are optimistic that their revenue from Second Life will grow. •61% of business owners are optimistic that their revenues will grow. •19% are very optimistic •42% are somewhat optimistic •39% are pessimistic. •24% were somewhat pessimistic •15% were very pessimistic - More than two-thirds anticipate maintaining or increasing their investment in their Second Life business. •68% are maintaining or increasing their investment compared to the last six months •15% are planning to invest significantly more •16% are investing slightly more than in the past six months •37% are planning to keep it the same •32% are reducing or curtailing their investment •16% plan no investments in the next six months •13% are planning to invest less •3% plan to leave Second Life altogether within the next six months - Almost two-thirds of the business owners report they generate positive net income from Second Life but for most it is just part of their total income. •64% report that they generate positive net income from the products/services they sell •52% generate up to 20% of their total income from Second Life •5% generate 20-40% •2% generate 40-60% •5% generate 80-100% •36% report that they break-even or lose money from the products/services they sell. - 8 out of 10 businesses in Second Life are sole proprietorships. •81% do not employ anyone •15% employ 1-5 •2% employ 6-10 •none employ 11-15 •2% employ more than 16 employees

I got the survey, I think there was a survey a while ago where we were asked if we'd take part in future surveys.

I got one too. I was one of the people who thought the email about it might be a scam. I talked to chat support before I would follow the link and fill it out.

I didn't get one either.
It's a clever trick: they've surveyed only the more visible businesses, which naturally gives a more positive picture, since they also tend to be more successful precisely because they are visible.

Good point. If I had the funds I'd buy an entire sim and put my biz there. Instead, I used less funds to start up what I can. Obviously owning an entire sim would make me appear more successful, when in reality that may not be the truth. The same is true in RL, so I wouldn't expect SL to be any different. Did any of this make sense?

I suspect the participants were either chosen at random or by something like traffic. (edit: or maybe tier.. I've got 1/2 a mainland sim) /me is certainly not a profitable business - I don't even actually sell stuff - but I still got the survey.

Never got the survey. Probably a good thing because it might make things seem rosier than they actually are, if I did.
I wonder how it worked, myself.
Are there 50 people enthusiastic about going from $L 200 a month earned to $L 1000, versus maybe one guy dropping from $L 1 beeeeellion to zero income?
Or could it be one guy going from crazy rich to way freaky sick obscene rich, while 50 people drop from $L 1000 a month to $L 200? Though the numbers don't seem to indicate that... but overall technically you could theoretically have a 'growing economy' under such conditions.
Definite pro's and con's depending how you look at things.

I bet I have more traffic than Desmond. (edit: because I think LL usually looks at parcel traffic, not group land traffic)
You're right that it certainly blows the tier thought out of the water, though...

I got one, and I have no traffic at all. So it must be random.

There was a thread on the forums about the same time where numerous posters complained about getting the survey and how they wouldn't do it. I took it . I generally take all the surveys LL asks.

I got one, I started the thread in here wondering who the heck it was from and if it was official. I ended up taking it.
I'm about as small-time as they come, so I doubt the distribution of the surveys was stacked in any way.

I took part in the survey and my feeling was (and still is) that they took the sampling of residents from people that cash out lindens. This would be a good indication of people who are making money in sl, and consequently would also likely have favorable responses to the questions.
Myself I know my business has been growing very steadily over the past 2 years, but to me this isnt any indication of the sl economy growing. I attribute it much more to hard work and the fact we keep making better products, offer much more, word of mouth and increased advertising. Its always hard for me to tell if the sl economy is growing or declining, but I am slightly confident that my business will continue to grow, but that is because I will cntinue to work hard.

I agree with Kristoffer. I got the survey too, and filled it out. My business has at least been steady, and has grown sometimes. My business is considered "big name" in my particular field, but that doesn't have any real effect on SL as a whole (and most of the Lindens have probably never heard of it). And I, too, don't think the economy has that much to do with how my business has fared.

I received _two_ - one to an alt who has, at one time, had something out for sale, but does not any more and has not for over a year, and one to myself later on.

I did the survey - my business is quite moderate and tends to be seasonal. I own one quarter sim and traffic is low - so I think it was a random selection.
There were questions about whether your products were PG or not and in what sort of proportions - so I was wondering whether the planning for zoning was under consideration.

I too did the survey. The most I remember from it was social networking options being in too many of the answers for the questions. That had me concerned.

I think it was random. I got one, but I'm sure they were confused by my answers as I answered as if NCI was my business, and we count ourselves quite successful making no profit at all
