From: someone Hi!
We are conducting research into the Second Life economy and wanted to get your feedback. This survey is focusing on the role business owners and land owners in the economy. We are looking to you, as important cogs in the economy, for what we can do to help the SL economy grow and help strengthen your business. In this survey, we ask some detailed financial questions that you may be reluctant to divulge. We definitely understand the concern and want to be very clear that the data will be collected and stored anonymously, so that your responses can never be tied back to your account. Please know that your privacy is an absolute priority for us. The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
Interested in seeing the results? If so, all you have to do is take the survey and we’ll make you part of a beta group that will have access to the survey results.
Thanks in advance for your participation. Your feedback is extremely valuable!
Regards, Your friends at Second Life
<survey links removed> from Second Life <noreply@qualtrics.com> reply-to Second Life <surveys@lindenlab.com> to Anti Antonelli <removed> date Sat, Feb 21, 2009 at 5:48 PM subject We want your feedback! mailed-by qualtrics.com --- Ummm... wtf? Anybody else get this spam, or know anything about this qualtrics outfit and if they have any relationship with Linden Lab? Not that I have any intention of clicking a link in an email or taking any damn surveys, just curious. Their web site presents a legitimate-looking survey outsourcing company of some kind, but the email itself lapses into some unprofessional phrasings and flat out mistakes and LL certainly doesn't need to ask me if they want my business metrics. More info would be great. And if there is no connection to LL, how in the hell did they get the email address connected with my SL account?

Sindy_Tsure: just got an email survey from "SecondLife" but the actual address is noreply@qualtrics.com Maggie: Hi, Sindy. Maggie: Yes, that's a legitimate survey of business owners in Second Life. Sindy_Tsure: oh.. ok! Sindy_Tsure: can i quote you in the forums? others are starting to ask about it too Sindy_Tsure: /327/1c/308536/1.htmlSindy_Tsure: or, if you'd like to reply to the forums, that'd be ok too Maggie: You can quote me if you like, that's fine. Sindy_Tsure: ty!

Please reply with the headers of the email so that they may be examined.
I will also do a quick lookup of qualtrics to see if they are just a fake front.

It was indeed very unprofessional in spots with at least one repeated question and some awful grammar. That said, it seems too complex an effort and it came to my login email address so I'm pretty sure it's an official survey -- albeit rather badly done.

Qualtrics is a pretty reputable survey outfit. It is a bit troubling that we didn't get a heads-up from LL first, though.

QFT , very poor planning here , i searched the blogs and found the qualtric link from an earlier survey, was curious but about to trash it because of the link. .

Thanks for taking the time to look into this Sindy! In other news... why hasn't anyone let the Lindens know that all they need to do in these cases is register a brand new account and have him post in Resident Answers with some story about a university class on virtual worlds and why don't we please do his research for him? It works every time!

From: Anti Antonelli Thanks for taking the time to look into this Sindy! No problem! I like to throw them an easy question every week or so to break them of the habit of running away when they see my name.

I went ahead and took the survey, it had a lot more depth than I expected and a few big juicy text boxes in places for me to type in suggestions. Some of the questions left me scratching my head though (proposed changes that were worded too ambiguously to tell what they really had in mind) but there were also some frankly intriguing prospects hinted at. I wonder what criteria landed this email in our inboxes, or if it went to everybody. I only hope they don't weight my responses based on my SL income though, or I just wasted a bunch of time

Someone asked about that in group chat yesterday and then I received one today.
I went ahead and filled it out.

I went ahead and filled it out. I'm still thinking about completing it came in here first to see if it was a topic yet, lol. It WAS poorly worded, like some phishes are, that's what bothered me. They said was geared to land owners; said 'detailed' financial information. They asking for bank account numbers and balances? Wonder why they would need such data?

The way the survey was introduced suggests that they sent it to all landowners. It had their usual "SL is Serious Business™, not entertainment" slant. There wasn't a way to indicate that you are just selling a few things on the side for fun.

Hmpf. A survey I'd actually take, and I did't get spammed to take it.

I filled it out, and I'm wondering if everyone got the same questions.
There wasn't anything I'd call detailed or the seemed like I'd need to be concerned about privacy about. Who cares about how I spend my money in SL?

There wasn't a way to indicate that you are just selling a few things on the side for fun. My alt received one who has never owned land and doesn't spend any money. Guess maybe they needed a control response from the other side of the tracks

From: Jesse Barnett My alt received one who has never owned land and doesn't spend any money. Guess maybe they needed a control response from the other side of the tracks Maybe they just sent it to one of the uniquely identified residents. I believe they have some means of identifying alts because they used that in their old statistics. I do hope your poor penniless alt wasn't too confused in answering the questions.

From: Anti Antonelli And if there is no connection to LL, how in the hell did they get the email address connected with my SL account? On reading your post and others that have also received this email I would still question it with LL. I just checked the Privacy Policy and TOS. From: http://secondlife.com/corporate/tos.php 6.2 Linden Lab may observe and record your interaction within the Service, and may share aggregated and other general information (not including your personal information) with third parties.
You acknowledge and agree that Linden Lab, in its sole discretion, may track, record, observe or follow any and all of your interactions within the Service. Linden Lab may share general, demographic, or aggregated information with third parties about our user base and Service usage, but that information will not include or be linked to any personal information without your consent. Given that Qualtrics is a Third Party which we automatically agree that information about our usage of the service can be used at LL's sole discretion (by accepting LL's terms on signing up) but not our personal information without prior consent. So did anyone give consent to your email being used as I think that is personal information.

It's reassuring to know that those incompetent, intrusive and annoying guys that ask us impolitely to complete surveys using the forums in contravention of the Guidelines must learn a lot from our feedback and grow up to become incompetent, intrusive and annoying guys that ask us impolitely to complete surveys using spam illegally. Pep (It *is* reassuring isn't it?)

From: Larrie Lane So did anyone give consent to your email being used as I think that is personal information. In the UK it is illegal for personal email addresses to be provided by one organisation to another for such purposes without specific opt-in by the individual. Pep (I don't know the situation elsewhere)

From: Sindy Tsure ... Sindy_Tsure: just got an email survey from "SecondLife" but the actual address is noreply@qualtrics.com Maggie: Hi, Sindy. Maggie: Yes, that's a legitimate survey of business owners in Second Life. And who is Maggie? The email bears all the hallmarks of a phishing expedition. Mixed fonts; grammatical errors; we will ask sensitive info, but don't worry...; data anonymous but link contains what looks like an ID. No. I'm sorry, but reassurance from an anonymous Maggie is not enough for me to even risk clicking the link. If this is really from LL, they need to rethink how they do this sort of thing.

I don't know how they've passed this info along but I have a feeling that it's not been done directly by providing e-mail addresses, maybe some sort of utility that let's them send it to an avatar's registered email address without them actually getting the email address themselves.
I say this because I've got this three times, to me and then two of my alts registered to the same email address.

From: Drongle McMahon And who is Maggie? Maggie Linden! She's a bit of a legend after she got into a debate with a 16M parcel owner who was complaining he'd had his banlines from the parcel removed and she asked him: "On a 16m parcel? Er. Do you stand in the middle of it and knit, or something like that?"

OK. I'll buy that, paranoid though I am. But they still need to do something to improve notification and to make the emails look minimally legitimate!
